Lehigh Continues Winning Ways With 4-0 Shutout of Sacred Heart
9/26/2021 7:32:00 PM | Field Hockey
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team followed its 7-2 win at Colgate Saturday with another impressive effort Sunday, this time topping Sacred Heart by a 4-0 final. It marked the Mountain Hawks' largest-ever margin of victory vs. the Pioneers. Lehigh wrapped up the weekend with 11 goals, its most over a two-game stretch since 2004.
Â
"We talked a lot about being able to put two back-to-back performances together," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We knew we played well for many moments yesterday, enough to get us a great win, but we had some lulls in our play. We were working on putting out a dominant performance for 60 minutes, making sure to make adjustments and stay locked in on the defensive end and of course, making sure we were putting shots on goal. We did a really nice job today all-around."
Â
Â
On Sunday, each side had an early shot on goal before the Mountain Hawks broke the ice. In the 10th minute, sophomore Abbie Brown found fifth-year senior Drew Pecora, who fired a low shot from just inside the circle that beat Sacred Heart goalkeeper Erin Burgess.
Â
Lehigh went on to add a single goal in each of the next three quarters, too, all off penalty corners.
Â
In the final minute of the first half, graduate student Lenke Havas scored off a feed from senior Olivia Perrone to make the score 2-0. The Mountain Hawks' lead reached 3-0 in the 40th minute as senior Leah Mullery made a redirection into the back of the cage. Then in the fourth, Havas took a pass from sophomore Julia Gatelein off a corner and fired low to account for the 4-0 final.
Â
Final shots were 16-2 in favor of Lehigh, as the Mountain Hawks didn't allow a shot for the game's final 47:01. Lehigh held a 6-2 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore Maddie Kahn finished with one save in goal.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will hit the road for a pair next weekend, traveling to Holy Cross on Saturday and Merrimack on Sunday.
Â
"When we're all together, unified and performing at the same level, we are awesome," said Dallmeyer. "We need to make sure that mentally, we are all checked in and we're helping those who might not be to be able to put out a good performance. We were able to do that this weekend really well."
