WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh field hockey team scored five goals over the final three quarters, while allowing just four shots all game, as the Mountain Hawks defeated Holy Cross 5-0 to improve to 3-0 in Patriot League play on Saturday afternoon. It marked Lehigh's largest-ever margin of victory vs. the Crusaders (previous high was three). Senior Leah Mullery paced the offense with two goals and junior Sarah Bonthuis also scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the victory.
Â
Lehigh is now 7-3 on the season, winners of five of its last six games. The Mountain Hawks have scored 16 goals over their last three games – the first time that's happened since 1975.
Â
"We knew we needed this game to be in contention for the Patriot League Tournament," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We didn't start the way we wanted to, but we reminded ourselves of the game plan after the first quarter and made adjustments. We were more aggressive over the last three quarters. The attack has been playing tremendously well and defensively, we played sound and composed. That composure on defense is what we're looking to bring with us over the rest of the season."
Â
Lehigh held a 3-0 first-quarter edge in shots. The Mountain Hawks fired eight more shots in the second (to zero for Holy Cross) and got their first goal, as sophomore Lotte Smorenburg scored for the second time in as many league contests.
Â
The Mountain Hawks quickly erased any doubt in the third quarter, scoring three times in 4:59 to take a 4-0 advantage. Lehigh's second and fourth goals of the afternoon were scored by Mullery off penalty corners, with senior Olivia Perrone scoring her first of the season as well.
Â
Just 4:01 into the fourth, Bonthuis put home another off a rebound for the 5-0 lead, which proved to be the final.
Â
Final shots were 23-4 in favor of Lehigh, with the Mountain Hawks not allowing a single shot in the first half. Lehigh held a 8-1 edge in corners.
Â
"I like the diversity of our scoring, coming from all angles," said Dallmeyer. "That's really meaningful in terms of what we're working to be capable of. I'm pleased with the overall team performance and focus we've brought to training in order to make this possible."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to the field on Sunday when they play at Merrimack. Gametime is set for 12 p.m. on NEC Front Row.
