Lehigh Drops Competitive 1-0 Decision at Seton Hall
9/12/2021 3:59:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall scored in the game's third minute, which proved to be all the Pirates would need as they downed the Lehigh women's soccer team, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in the Mountain Hawks' final nonleague tune-up before Patriot League play. With the loss, Lehigh falls to 2-3 while Seton Hall improves to 5-2. The Mountain Hawks had plenty of opportunities, firing 14 shots for the game – six on goal – including five shots on goal in the game's final 26:53.
Â
"Heading into the Patriot League starting next week, it was a really good game," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "Good test for us. We had more moments than we've had in the past. It was up-and-down a little bit, but we were always able to turn it and always able to have some good moments. There were moments we were dangerous and defended well.
Â
"I like our fight, I like how we worked. We're disappointed with the result, but we're not super disappointed in the way we played."
Â
Things didn't start well for the Mountain Hawks as in the third minute, Seton Hall put away the game's first shot. Julia Aronov collected a centering pass and beat Lehigh sophomore goalkeeper Violette Bonvallet low for the 1-0 lead.
Â
"We learned we can't shut off for a second because a good team can capitalize, which happened early," said Lambinus.
Â
Lehigh responded with the next three shots and four of the next six, including a shot on goal from senior Rebecca Van Siclen. Bonvallet stopped the Pirates' only other shot on goal of the first half, coming in the 26th minute.
Â
The Mountain Hawks only got stronger in the second half as they fired 10 shots (six on frame) over the game's final 45 minutes. Lehigh had a string of six straight shots (from six different players) between the 64th and 79th minutes, five of which were on target, but Seton Hall goalkeeper Grace Gordon stopped them all to earn the shutout.
Â
Final shots were 15-14 in favor of Seton Hall while the Pirates held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Bonvallet finished with five saves.
Â
"I thought it was a really even game," said Lambinus. "There were times they had momentum and were dangerous, but I thought the same for us."
Â
The Mountain Hawks will now shift focus to the Patriot League opener as they host Army West Point on Saturday at 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
Â
"Our nonleague schedule definitely challenged us, both home and road," said Lambinus. "It definitely challenged us to be good, taught us who we are and gave us an opportunity to learn about our team. Over the six games, we've played a lot of players, so I think we have a good sense of where we are and who we are going into the Patriot League. If we can start strong and get better each game, I think we can do pretty well."
