Havas Posts Hat Trick as Lehigh Tops Longwood in Home Opener, 3-2
8/29/2021 8:09:00 PM | Field Hockey
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Graduate student Lenke Havas posted her first-career hat trick, accounting for all of Lehigh field hockey's goals in an impressive 3-2 win over visiting Longwood on Sunday. After the Lancers pulled even at one early in the third quarter, the Mountain Hawks responded just 5:08 later then made it 3-1 only 2:55 after that. Longwood scored in the 54th minute, but Lehigh didn't allow a shot the rest of the way.
Â
"We had great ball movement," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We had really great structure moving forward and were able to keep the structure and do what we needed to do within it to be successful. We knew we needed to be better moving forward after our game against Villanova and within the first five minutes of the game [today], we were doing all of them. I was really happy with our ability to adjust quickly and our ability to make changes in such short periods of time that helped us be successful."
Â
Like they did on Friday, the Mountain Hawks got off to a fast start in the first quarter. This time, Havas scored her first of the season off a penalty corner, assisted by junior Sarah Bonthuis, to make it 1-0 at the 8:04 mark.
Â
The second quarter featured no shots for either side, but it took Longwood just 57 seconds into the third quarter off a penalty corner to pull even. The Mountain Hawks posted an impressive response, as Havas scored her second off a corner (from fellow fifth-year Drew Pecora), then put home a penalty stroke to give Lehigh a 3-1 lead at 39:00.
Â
Longwood held an 8-1 fourth-quarter edge in shots, but junior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn stood tall in making four saves. The Lancers converted a rebound in the 54th minute to pull within 3-2, but that's as close as they would come.
Â
Final shots were 15-9 in favor of Longwood while the Lancers held an 8-6 edge in penalty corners. Kahn finished with seven saves across Madison Nuckols, who tallied two.
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Sunday when they host Bryant at 11 a.m. on ESPN+.
Â
"Longwood is a phenomenal team and this is a very big win for us, so I am very excited with what we were able to do today," said Dallmeyer. "Now, being consistent moving forward is going to be our number one goal to be able to maintain this level of play."
