Mountain Hawks Handle Bryant, 3-1
9/5/2021 4:28:00 PM | Field Hockey
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bryant scored just 7:13 into the contest on its only shot of the first half, but the Lehigh field hockey battled back with a goal in the second, third and fourth quarters on the way to a 3-1 home victory on Sunday. Sophomore Erica Steele evened the score in the 18th minute with her first-career goal, then junior Sarah Bonthuis put Lehigh ahead in the 37th minute and sophomore Julia Gatelein added an insurance goal in the 54th minute. The Mountain Hawks, who are now 2-1 on the season, held a dominant 32-5 edge in shots.
Â
"Their goalkeeper was great," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "She was fantastic and we really struggled to find ways to be able to execute our corners around her. She was making some amazing saves and we were focused on rebounding. I think we did a great job in the backfield moving the ball forward. Our midfield movement was good; we connected really well with our forwards moving into the circle, but that's where we got stopped a lot. We will work this week on making sure we can find new and creative ways to put the ball in the net."
Â
"We are working on being relentless," said Dallmeyer. "We have a really great group of team members right now who expect a lot of themselves, so a one-goal deficit isn't going to shake anybody."
Â
The Mountain Hawks came right back to record six more shots and four penalty corners over the final 5:16 of the stanza, but they couldn't put one past Bryant goalkeeper Marijn Jaarsma, who was stellar all day with 15 saves.
The pressure continued into the second quarter and led to Lehigh pulling even less than three minutes in. Following Jaarsma's initial save of a Lenke Havas chance, Bonthuis found Steele near the back post and the sophomore tapped it in for the equalizer.
Â
That scored remained until the third quarter when again, following a Jaarsma save off a corner, Bonthuis collected the rebound and this time, fired one into the open cage before Jaarsma could recover. That made it 2-1 at the 36:28 mark.
Â
"Sarah is just getting her wheels spinning," said Dallmeyer. "I think she has a high ceiling and she's done a lot for us in the past, but this year, she's taking more ownership of her role. She's understanding her role a lot better, she's making adjustments to touch the ball more and play great defense. I'm really proud of Sarah and her development over the last three games, but I don't think we've yet seen the best of her. She's got more to give and I think we're going to see that by the end of the season."
Â
Lehigh added an insurance tally in the 54th minute as sophomore Abbie Brown fed the ball into the circle, a Bryant defender blocked it, but never got control and Gatelein put home her first goal of the young season.
Â
The Bulldogs had a little flurry late, posting two shots on goal in the 58th minute, which sophomore Maddie Kahn stopped.
Â
Along with Lehigh's dominant margin in shots, the Mountain Hawks held a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners. Kahn finished with two saves in goal.  As a team, the Mountain Hawks now have nine goals through three games (scoring three in each contest). It's the program's most through three games since 1984. It's the first time Lehigh began the season with 3+ goals in each of its first three contests since 1975 (the program's third season). It's also the first time the Mountain Hawks have scored 3+ goals in three straight games since 2016.
Â
After two straight home games, Lehigh hits the road on Friday at La Salle. Gametime in Philly is set for 3 p.m.
