Becomes 16th Mountain Hawk selected all-time, second in 2021
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The 16th player drafted in program history, Lehigh righty Matt Svanson was selected 392nd overall by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 13th round of the 2021 MLB Draft Tuesday afternoon.
Svanson joins junior right-hander Mason Black (85th, San Francisco Giants) as the two Mountain Hawks taken in the draft this season, bringing the total of former Lehigh active professional ballplayers to five, the most in the 135-plus year history of the program.
The Hawthorn Woods, Ill. native was electric throughout this past season, cementing himself as the Patriot League's most consistent starting pitcher by year's end. Svanson posted a record of 4-4 with a league-best 2.30 ERA in 12 starts. He struck out 65 batters, walked 24 in 70.1 innings, holding hitters to a .222 batting average.
Along with Black, Svanson earned First Team All-Patriot League honors and was a member of the All-Tournament team. He threw eight innings without allowing an earned run with four strikeouts as Lehigh stayed alive against Army West Point in Game 2 of the Patriot League Championship Series.
A highlight of his collegiate career, Svanson tossed the final three innings of a combined no-hitter against Saint Peter's in his freshman season.
Svanson joins Lehigh products Mark Washington (Dodgers), Levi Stoudt (Mariners), Jason Reynolds (Padres) and Black (Giants) on the Road to the Show.
