Men’s Rowing Wraps Up Season With Strong Effort at Bucknell

SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's rowing team wrapped up its season against Bucknell on Saturday, falling by just under four seconds, but showing big strides along the way. Just weeks prior, the Mountain Hawks and Bison had squared off, but this time, the strides Lehigh had made this season were evident.

"Earlier in the season, Bucknell demonstrated they were faster than us," said Lehigh assistant coach Alex Urbanik. "But I think based upon today's performance, it showed that we really developed over the past few weeks and really gained some speed on them. For about half of the race, our guys had a small lead and pushed Bucknell to the point where they had to fight hard to get back and win."

In the end, Bucknell finished in first at 5:54.5 with Lehigh finishing in 5:58.1. The Bison's Second Varsity Eight came in third (6:16.4).

Saturday marked the end of a short and unusual spring campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but one the Mountain Hawks should be proud of.

"I spoke to them after the race and complimented them on taking the step to commit to opting in," said Urbanik. "It wasn't a small feat and it brought its own set of challenges and stresses to the year. For the most part, they handled the stresses extremely well. Based upon where they started the season and where they finished, they showed they have the ability to come together and form a really tight team connection and translate it to high-quality practices and develop speed. I don't think I could have asked for much more from them as a group in terms of their commitment and ability to handle everything."

Urbanik couldn't be more excited for the future.

"We had two seniors, one junior and the rest sophomores," he said. "If they continue to have that passion and level of work ethic, that sophomore class could be significantly faster next year and who knows what they could do as seniors. Ultimately, while it's disappointing we didn't get to compete in a championship regatta [this season], at the end of the day, they got to go out there and race, develop and learn. They demonstrated they can compete with some of the better teams in the league. I'm proud of them and excited to see what they can continue doing."
