BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following an impressive week at the plate in three victories for Lehigh baseball, junior Casey Rother was named Patriot League Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Rother hit .643 (9-for-14) while slugging .786 with a .737 on-base percentage to help the Mountain Hawks to a 3-1 week, with two wins over Bucknell and a win over Lafayette last Wednesday.
He doubled twice, walked five times, drove in two runs and scored four times over four multi-hit games. In a doubleheader sweep of the Bison on the road Saturday, Rother was a combined 5-for-7 with four runs scored.
Currently pacing the way in the race for the Patriot League batting title, Rother is batting a league-leading .373 with 28 hits, 16 RBIs, a .560 slugging percentage and a .466 on-base percentage.
Rother joins fellow teammates Eric Cichocki (twice) and Gerard Sweeney as Patriot League Players of the Week throughout the 2021 season so far. Lehigh has not had four Player of the Week honors in the same season since 2016 (Jacen Nalesnik, Mike Garzillo, Patrick Donnelly, James Bleming).
Junior right-hander Mason Black was named an honorable mention for his superb start on Saturday against Bucknell. Black allowed two runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings, striking out seven batters and earned his fourth win of the season in the 6-3 victory. He's now 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA in 41 innings pitched on the 2021 campaign and is currently leading the Patriot League with 61 strikeouts.
The Mountain Hawks take on Lafayette Wednesday, April 14 at 3 p.m. from J. David Walker Field in the final game of the season series. Lehigh looks for the season sweep of the Leopards for the first time since 2017. Wednesday's matinee will be streamed live on ESPN+.
