Two-Goal Second-Quarter is the Difference as American Tops Lehigh, 2-0

4/11/2021 5:19:00 PM | Field Hockey

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Lehigh field hockey team gave itself a chance at defending Patriot League champion American on Sunday, but the Eagles scored twice in the span of 1:50, on their way to a 2-0 win over the Mountain Hawks. The two-goal margin was Lehigh's smallest at American since 2001 (the first-ever meeting between the two sides). Sophomore Maddie Kahn finished with 10 saves in goal, while senior Lenke Havas made a defensive stop. Now 2-2, Lehigh looks ahead to the regular season finale at Boston University with a spot in the Patriot League Tournament still up for grabs.

"We did a really nice job defending," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "They scored only one open field-goal. Abbie Brown did a phenomenal job in the midfield containing Noor (Coenen). She got a few shots up, but didn't score and didn't run the midfield like she normally does. We contained her well to minimize her damage, which feels almost impossible to do. It was a breakout game for Abbie to be asked to do some really hard things against a great player, and executing under pressure."

Last season (2019), Coenen was the Patriot League's Offensive Player of the Year, posting 18 goals and eight assists for 44 points. She entered Sunday with a goal and four assists, having a hand in five of the Eagles' seven goals on the season.

The first quarter saw a number of golden scoring chances for Lehigh, the first coming when sophomore Sarah Bonthuis found classmate MJ Schwab near the cage, but American goalkeeper Bryn Underwood made the first of her four saves. Later in the stanza, Underwood stopped a shot from sophomore Cece Slaughter from near the top of the circle.
Midway through the second quarter, Julia Kraft gave American a 1-0 lead. Coenen's initial shot led to a defensive save from Havas, but Kraft collected the rebound and scored at the 22:11 mark. Just under two minutes later, Maura Phelan converted a penalty stroke for a 2-0 advantage.

The Mountain Hawks' defense stood tall from there, not allowing another goal and allowing just three more shots over the game's next 24:42. After the third quarter saw just one combined shot, Lehigh had a number of strong chances in the fourth. Less than five minutes in, Julia Gatelein centered to classmate Lotte Smorenburg in the circle, but Underwood came out to deny Smorenburg of her first-career goal.
Earlier in the quarter, Schwab had a shot on goal, as did Gatelein in the final two minutes.

Final shots were 19-6 in favor of Lehigh while the Eagles held a 10-3 edge in penalty corners.
"We knew we were playing a really talented American team," said Dallmeyer. "Coming in, our goal was to play our best hockey that we've played so far. We had to make lineup adjustments with people in new positions and I think we were effective doing that. We started the week with some hard film breakdown from the Holy Cross game, holding ourselves accountable and fixing mistakes. There were a number of people who did an amazing job today. Erica Steele ended up getting significant minutes on the back line and did a really good job."

The Mountain Hawks return to action next Sunday at Boston University. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.

"We had a lot of first-years continuing to shine on the field and a significant amount," said Dallmeyer. "It continues to show the development of our program. The future is definitely bright, with so many sophomores and first-years on the field."
