Resilient Mountain Hawks Battle, but Fall Short at No. 20 Boston University

4/18/2021 8:22:00 PM | Field Hockey

BOSTON – Needing a win to advance to the Patriot League Tournament, a shorthanded Lehigh field hockey team battled back from an early 2-0 hole to pull even, but No. 20 Boston University scored the game's final three goals to defeat the Mountain Hawks, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Lehigh ends its season 2-3, a season that included continued strides forward for the program.

"I feel we played really well overall as a team," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We battled back. It was a really high-paced game. We continued to build off our previous game against American, which was also high-paced."

The Terriers got off to a fast start, taking a 1-0 lead just 34 seconds in. Following a penalty corner, senior goalkeeper Stephanie Brabender – who was making her first start of the season – made a pair of saves, but Liz Ryan put home the rebound.

Less than two minutes later, Boston University increased its lead to 2-0.

But the Mountain Hawks battled back in a big way. Lehigh answered with eight of the next nine shots, two of which found the back of the cage. Just 19 seconds after the Terriers took a two-goal lead, senior Lenke Havas fired a shot off a penalty corner past Boston University goalkeeper Caroline Kelly.

Early in the second quarter, Julia Gatelein scored her third of her rookie season, putting home a rebound off a corner to even the score. After BU's 2-0 lead, Lehigh's defense did not allow a shot on goal for the game's next 29:28. The Terriers came out in the third quarter firing, and Brabender made two early third-quarter saves, but she couldn't stop shots at the 38:21 and 42:29 marks. Boston University added an insurance goal in the fourth for the 5-2 final.

"We moved Drew Pecora into the center midfield spot; she played there the whole game and was outstanding," said Dallmeyer. "She really adapted quickly this week into that role and totally blew me away with her stamina and ability to be a fantastic connecting line to the attack line. I am really, really proud of her performance and the way she ended the season."

BU finished with a slim 14-13 edge in shots while the Mountain Hawks recorded a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners. Brabender made six saves across the Terriers' Kelly, who tallied three.

Lehigh began the spring with wins over Lafayette (1-0) and Bucknell (4-0), the first time since 2004 that the Mountain Hawks beat both the Leopards and Bison. Despite losses in the next three, Lehigh gave itself a chance until the very end vs. Holy Cross, had its smallest margin at American (2-0) since 2001, then despite being shorthanded with personnel, gave itself a chance deep into the second half at a nationally-ranked opponent.

"The level of hockey that we're playing is far above where this program has played before," said Dallmeyer. "The progress is evident in watching us play and ability to shift in-game play, implement new things and sub through different lineups. We've been able to sub a lot this year because the level has stayed really high-paced as we've had great depth on the bench. Overall, I feel confident ending the season knowing we're in a far different place athletically than we ever have before, which gives me great excitement heading into the fall."
