BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Another Lehigh dual went down to the final bout at heavyweight but this time the result went against the Mountain Hawks. With Lehigh leading 15-14 after nine bouts, fifth-ranked senior Jordan Wood dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 14 Ethan Laird allowing Rider to claim a 17-15 win over the 25th-ranked Mountain Hawks.
The Mountain Hawks won four bouts, including another fall from junior Jaret Lane at 125 but lost two sudden victory decisions and dropped a third bout on a takedown in the final five seconds, allowing Rider to stay within striking distance until the end.
The loss drops Lehigh to 3-4 on the season while Rider improves to 3-1.
The dual began with Lane's fifth straight win to begin the season and his third fall in five bouts. Lane led 5-4 after a high-action first period, escaped to open the second and then used a headlock to bring Jonathan Tropea to his back, securing the fall at 3:49 to stake Lehigh to a 6-0 lead.
Rider picked up its first win at 133 as Richie Koehler won a 6-4 decision over sophomore Mitch Polito. It was Polito who scored first but Koehler scored a takedown and added a penalty point in the second period to offset a third period reversal.
Freshman Connor McGonagle picked up his first career win with a 6-1 decision over McKenzie Bell at 141 to put the Mountain Hawks up 9-3. McGonagle scored a takedown in the first period and picked up a penalty point for a headbutt, then rode out the second and reversed to open the third as he racked up more than five minutes of riding time.
The first of two overtime bouts that went the Broncs' way came at 149 as Wyatt McCarthy took down senior Joe Lobeck with 13 seconds left in sudden victory to win 3-1.

A wild 7-6 decision for sophomore AJ Burkhart over Cole McComas at 157 put the Mountain Hawks up 12-6 at the midway point. Burkhart scored takedowns in each of the first two periods and finished with 1:34 of riding time but was nearly taken down in the final seconds. The riding time point proved to be the difference in the match.
The Broncs opened the second half of the dual with three straight victories to take a 14-12 lead. Jake Silverstein scored a takedown 14 seconds into sudden victory to beat sophomore Brian Meyer 3-1 at 165. Jake Logan led Angel Garcia 3-2 late in the third period at 174, but Garcia was able to convert a takedown with under five seconds remaining to win 4-3. Rider's George Walton capped the run with a 6-3 decision over freshman Caden Wright at 184.
Senior Jake Jakobsen put Lehigh back in front after nine bouts with a 2-0 decision over Matt Correnti at 197 behind a second period escape and third period ride out.
The dual came down to the only two nationally ranked wrestlers who weighed in. After a scoreless first period, Laird escaped to open the second with Wood immediately scoring a takedown to take the lead. Wood had an opportunity for a turn but his attempt was ruled illegal and the penalty point tied the bout at 2-2. Laird escaped to take the lead and scored a takedown in the final seconds of the period to lead 5-2 after two. In the third, Wood escaped early and scored another takedown to tie the bout at 5-5. Unable to get to the one-minute riding time threshold, Wood granted Laird an escape but Laird countered a late Wood shot attempt to win 8-5, giving the visiting Broncs the dual.
Two extra matches followed the dual with freshman Sheldon Seymour winning 5-3 over Tyler Klinsky at 125 and Rider's Shane Reitsma beating sophomore Andrew Shedleski at 184.
The Mountain Hawks' scheduled Feb. 13 dual with American has been postponed due to a pause in athletic activities at American University. Lehigh is scheduled to close out the regular season against Bucknell on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. The match will be televised on Service Electric Network and streamed at Lehighsports.com/watch.
