Mountain Hawks Hit The Road For Duals At Lock Haven, No. 2 Penn State

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh was off from competition over the Thanksgiving holiday and the 22nd-ranked Mountain Hawks are ready to return to the mats as Lehigh heads to central Pennsylvania for road duals against Lock Haven and No. 2 Penn State. The Mountain Hawks opened their home schedule with an impressive 26-9 win over then-No. 15 Pitt on Nov. 21 and will face two more in-state foes before pausing for final exams. Lehigh won seven bouts against the Panthers and defeated a pair of top five-ranked wrestlers. The Mountain Hawks will visit Lock Haven Saturday at 1 p.m. for their first meeting with the Bald Eagles since Nov. 2006. Lehigh will then head to Penn State Sunday at 2 p.m. for the 109th edition of its most-contested dual meet series.

The Mountain Hawks opened their home schedule with an impressive 26-9 victory over No. 15 Pitt, Nov. 21 inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Lehigh won seven bouts, scoring bonus points in three, and knocked off a pair of top five-ranked Panthers along the way. First year Malyke Hines delivered the biggest win of his young career with a late defensive pin of fifth-ranked Micky Phillippi at 133. Sophomore Brian Meyer won a 4-3 decision over returning NCAA finalist Jake Wentzel at 165. First year Jake Logan capped an impressive four-bout Lehigh run with two third period takedowns to earn a victory at 174.

When Lehigh meets No. 2 Penn State on Sunday the Mountain Hawks will face a top-five ranked opponent for the first time since the 2019-20 season when Lehigh went 2-1 against top five foes, beating No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 5 Arizona State and losing to No. 3 Penn State. The Mountain Hawks own five dual wins over top five teams under Pat Santoro. Lehigh defeated No. 1 Cornell in 2010-11, No. 3 Ohio State in 2014-15 and No. 4 Michigan in 2017-18. All of Lehigh's top five wins under Santoro have come at home except for the win over Ohio State, which came at the NWCA National Duals in Iowa City, Iowa.

Freshman Malyke Hines went 8-3 in 2021 winning an EIWA title at 133 and going 2-2 in his first appearance at the NCAA Championships. One of two freshmen to win an EIWA crown last year, Hines was named the EIWA's Freshman of the Year last spring. A three-time state champion at Osceola High School in Florida, Hines joined Jordan Wood (2018) and Josh Humphreys (2019) as recent freshman EIWA champions for the Mountain Hawks.

Five Lehigh wrestlers appear in the latest InterMat rankings, led by senior Jordan Wood and junior Josh Humphreys, who are ranked 10th at 285 and 157, respectively. The Mountain Hawks also have five wrestlers ranked by FloWrestling, led by Wood at No. 9. Four Lehigh wrestlers are ranked by Amateur Wrestling News and three appear in the latest rankings from The Open Mat. Wood, Humphreys and junior Jaret Lane (125) are ranked across all four outlets. Sophomore Brian Meyer is ranked by three, while EIWA champion Malyke Hines is ranked by two. InterMat ranks wrestlers 1-33. FloWrestling ranks 1-25. AWN and the Open Mat both go 1-20.

Lock Haven opens its dual season on Thursday when the Bald Eagles host Michigan State, before Lehigh visits on Saturday afternoon. The Bald Eagles spent the first month of the season on the tournament circuit, competing at the Clarion Invitational, the Journeymen Collegiate Classic and the Nov. 20 Navy Classic. Senior Luke Werner won the Navy Classic at 125 and is one of two Bald Eagles ranked by InterMat along with Ben Barton at 157. Barton finished fourth at the Navy Classic. Scott Moore is in his ninth season as Lock Haven's head coach.

Lehigh and Lock Haven will meet for the 13th time and the first time since the 2006-07 season when the Mountain Hawks claimed a 33-9 win in the Pennsylvania Duals. The Mountain Hawks have won the last two duals in the series, which began in December of 1969.

Penn State brings a 3-0 dual mark into a weekend that will begin with a trip to Penn before Lehigh visits Rec Hall on Sunday. The Nittany Lions defeated Sacred Heart and Oregon State at Spooky Nook Sports Complex on Nov. 13 and bested Army on Nov. 18 in their home opener. Penn State has won eight of the last 10 NCAA team titles but had a run of four straight championships end at the hands of Iowa last March. The Nittany Lions did win four individual NCAA titles last March with all four champions returning and currently ranked No. 1 at their respective weights: Roman Bravo-Young (133), Nick Lee (141), Carter Starocci (174) and Aaron Brooks (184). Four other Penn State wrestlers currently appear in the latest InterMat rankings. NCAA wrestling legend Cael Sanderson is in his 13th season as Penn State's head coach.

Lehigh and Penn State met at least once in 87 consecutive seasons before the 2020-21 meeting was erased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Nittany Lions have won the last 10 duals in the series. Lehigh won the first two duals with Penn State under Pat Santoro, but Santoro is now 2-10 versus the Nittany Lions as Lehigh's head coach. The Mountain Hawks' last dual win over the Nittany Lions was Cael Sanderson's first dual as Penn State head coach in Nov. 2009.
