Unbeaten Lehigh hits the road for the first time at Seton Hall Tuesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Through the first two games of the 2021-22 season, the Lehigh women's basketball team has rolled to dominant victories over East Stroudsburg and Saint Peter's. On Tuesday, the Mountain Hawks face their first true test, taking on Seton Hall on the road for the first time this season, visiting Walsh Gymnasium Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Tuesday's matchup will be the return trip from 2019's meeting between the two teams in which Lehigh prevailed by seven points at Stabler Arena for the program's first victory over the Pirates in 34 years.

The Patriot League's only remaining unbeaten team, the Mountain Hawks have an opportunity to improve to 3-0 to start the year for the fourth consecutive season.

Frannie Hottinger was in fine form the last two games for Lehigh, pouring in 19 points in the opener against East Stroudsburg and adding a season-high 22 in the victory over Saint Peter's on Friday. She is averaging 20.5 points per game and 7.0 rebounds, currently ranked third in the league for the latter. For her hot start to the year, Hottinger was named a Patriot League honorable mention.

Including Hottinger, four Mountain Hawks scored in double-figures in Friday's win over the Peacocks with Emma Grothaus (16), Megan Walker (14) and Mackenzie Kramer (13) all putting in complete performances to lead Lehigh.

Lehigh has also seen great production from its bench to start the season with freshman Meghan O'Brien (7.0 ppg) and Anna Harvey (5.0) both providing valuable minutes in both games.

Seton Hall comes into Tuesday night's meeting with an even 1-1 record to kick off the 2021-22 season. In two home meetings to open up the year, it took down Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday night, 81-68 before falling to Fordham on Saturday, 82-63.

Against the Rams, Sidney Cooks scored 21 points with nine boards to lead the way, followed by Andra Espinoza-Hunter's 20 and Lauren Park-Lane's 15 points and six assists. Amari Wright scored four points with four rebounds in 23 minutes to lead the second unit. The Pirates shot 38.6 percent (22-for-57) from the field and 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from downtown. Seton Hall held Fordham to 44.3 percent (31-for-70) shooting and 34.6 percent (9-for-26) from beyond-the-arc.

The Pirates are paced offensively by three players averaging nearly 20.0 points per game with Cooks (21.0), Espinoza-Hunter (20.5) and Park-Lane (19.5) all pacing their teammates. Cooks is also Seton Hall's leader in rebounds (9.0) and is shooting a team-best 66.7 percent from the floor.

Not only is Park-Lane lighting up the scoreboard, but she is also averaging 5.0 assists per game, which leads the team.

As a team, Seton Hall is shooting 41.2 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from 3-point territory. The Pirates' field goal percentage defense has struggled, holding opponents to 46.3 percent shooting and seven 3-pointers per game.

Traditionally, Lehigh has struggled against Seton Hall, going 2-5 all-time against the Pirates in a series that dates all the way back to the 1976-77 season.

However, the tides turned in 2019 when the Mountain Hawks topped Seton Hall, 75-68 at Stabler Arena for the team's first victory over the Pirates since Nov. 25, 1985 on the road.

A victory on Tuesday would mark the second consecutive for Lehigh and first in South Orange since 1985. This is the Mountain Hawks' first game at Walsh Gymnasium since Jan. 11, 1988, a 74-64 win for Seton Hall.
