BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the first time this season, the Lehigh women's basketball team returns to Stabler Arena, hosting Saint Peter's on Friday in the second game of the new campaign. The Mountain Hawks (1-0, 0-0 PL) tip-off with the Peacocks (0-1, 0-0 MAAC) at 7 p.m. with the game streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
The 2021-22 season started off on a high note for Lehigh, downing East Stroudsburg 82-35 on Tuesday night in the season opener in front of a sold-out Grace Hall crowd. The Mountain Hawks used a run of 26-5 to turn a two-point lead to a 23-point advantage at 36-13 into halftime.
Lehigh out-scored ESU 30-7 in the fourth quarter to run away with a 47-point win, the sixth largest margin of victory in program history and biggest since 2019 vs. Bloomsburg.
Junior wing Frannie Hottinger led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Mackenzie Kramer had 15 points, three assists and four steals with a trio of 3-pointers. Junior guard Anna Harvey scored eight points to lead the bench unit.
The Mountain Hawks struggled shooting from downtown until late in the fourth quarter, going 9-of-36 from beyond-the-arc. The defense did its job, holding ESU to just 25 percent (13-for-52) from the field and forcing 32 turnovers on 16 steals, the most since getting 20 against Boston University on Jan. 5, 2014. 38 of Lehigh's 82 points on the night came off the 32 turnovers.
Saint Peter's defense played well, but the offense struggled in a 59-38 defeat to Rutgers on the road on Tuesday night.
The Peacocks trailed 24-13 at the half and despite a 13-2 run midway through the third quarter, the Scarlet Knights prevailed for the 21-point win.
Second Team Preseason All-MAAC selection Kendrea Williams led the way with 10 points, seven of which came from the foul line, while Kassondra Brown scored eight points with eight rebounds.
The Peacocks shot just 10-of-45 (22 percent) from the field and 11 percent (2-for-17) from beyond-the-arc. 20 of their 38 points came off Rutgers' 25 turnovers.
Last season Saint Peter's finished the year 13-15 overall with a 10-9 MAAC record and as a third-seed in the conference tournament, advanced all the way to the championship game before falling to top-seed Marist, 69-30.
Lehigh has had great all-time success against Saint Peter's as Friday will mark the eighth matchup between the two teams.
The Mountain Hawks hold a 7-0 edge in the series dating all the way back to the first meeting between the teams in 2010.
Lehigh beat the Peacocks in Jersey City on Dec. 29, 2019. Saint Peter's led by five points at the half and the Mountain Hawks used a 15-5 fourth quarter to come away with the 80-71 victory. Camryn Buhr had a team-high 20 points, while Emma Grothaus chipped in 12 points with seven boards in 27 minutes off the bench.
