Lehigh to Continue Fall Slate at Head of the Housatonic Saturday
10/8/2021 10:04:00 AM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following its fall opener on Sunday, the Lehigh rowing team quickly returns to action six days later at the Head of the Housatonic in Shelton, Connecticut. Saturday's racing begins at 10:15 a.m. with the Women's Eights and continues with the Men's Eights at 11:45 a.m., Women's Fours at 2:05 p.m. and Men's Fours at 3:15 p.m.
Â
It will be a standard fall head race style regatta, with crews going off in a time trial format one at a time and racing for the best time of the day.
Â
"We will be racing really tough competition that includes programs with experience racing at the NCAA Championships and we will see at least one Patriot League team there," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We want to simply see where we stand when we execute our race plan like we did this past weekend. Head racing is hard because it forces a crew to stay very internal and self-motivated should you find yourself alone on the course at any time.Â
Â
"It is a long course to race, so most importantly, I am looking for consistency of technique and speed. Composure will be an important factor this season in practices and in racing."
Â
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a strong effort at the Stockton Invitational last weekend, winning each and every race against the host Stockton Ospreys.
Â
"We reviewed the weekend and we felt we definitely raced really well and the team felt positive about what they did on the race course that day," said Conley. "We have some things we are working on, particularly on the recovery of our rowing stroke and how we put the oar in the water, but the team has been doing a really nice job of trying to incorporate those changes. It's incredibly fun to watch the athletes develop from one stroke to the next."
Â
The next strokes for Lehigh will be at the Head of the Housatonic, another opportunity to compete and improve – which is what the fall season is all about.
Â
"Goals of the weekend are to stay consistent on the race and see how many individual crews we can beat," said Conley. "Last week, our B boat was beating A boats and our C boat beat Stockton's B boat. I think if we keep trying to rise to the occasion of racing as hard as we can, we will not only surprise others, but ourselves as well."
Â
After Saturday's racing, the Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia.
