Mountain Hawks Enjoy Success at Stockton Invitational in Fall Opener
10/3/2021 10:49:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The Lehigh rowing team opened its fall season on Sunday with a strong effort at the Stockton Invitational against host Stockton University on the Intracoastal Waterway. The day featured stake racing where crews start approximately 10 seconds apart and race to a buoy about 2,000 meters out before stopping, spinning quickly and racing back to where they originally started.
Â
"I think today, we raced the way we practice, which is important for us to learn early on in the season," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It will allow us to do a lot of things later on which will allow us to do well at our championships."
Â
In total, there were five events on the day, with a Lehigh boat finishing first in all of them. The Mountain Hawks' A boat came in first in the Women's Varsity Four (17:53), the B crew won the Men's Varsity Four (16:21), the A boat captured the Men's Eights (15:51), the A crew won the Women's Eights (16:36) and the A boat won the Men's Novice Fours (18:40).
Â
"Honestly, I think all the crews did really, really well," said Conley. "For the first-years and the novices, this was their first-ever collegiate race. To have a race that was nontraditional, with a 18- degree turn, handle it well and compete well, and to place in the top three in some of the events is awesome and bodes well for us down the road. I thought the upperclassmen did a fantastic job of setting the bar high, but we need to keep reaching higher and higher each and every week.
Â
"Stockton is going to be a really good team this year," Conley continued. "They showed a lot of great progress so far this fall and I'm looking forward to seeing them at the MARC (Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference) Championships in the spring, along with a couple other races throughout the year."
Â
Conley left the fall opener optimistic heading into the next race – the Head of the Housatonic – this Saturday in Shelton, Connecticut.
Â
"[Today] tells us that we believe the training we're doing is working and allows us to improve and get faster each day," said Conley. "Whereas if a crew goes out and races differently from how they practice, there's little faith of what they're doing technically and training-wise. Our team believes in what we're doing, which is important for us moving forward."
