Lehigh looks to ascend league table with important matchup at Navy

10/22/2021 2:42:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The league schedule is winding down for the 2021 campaign with only three opportunities remaining for the Lehigh men's soccer team to gather points, attempting to qualify for the Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks' (2-10-2, 2-4-0 PL) next big test will be on Saturday evening, taking on Navy at 5 p.m. in Annapolis.

Lehigh, currently 0-5-1 away from home this season, will take on a Midshipmen (10-2-1, 4-2-1 PL) side that has yet to lose at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility, going 7-0-0 in those games.

The Mountain Hawks won their last Patriot League contest, a 2-0 shutout victory of archrival Lafayette last Saturday, but fell 2-0 to Princeton at home on Tuesday in the final non-league fixture of the season.

Against the Leopards, Jack Sarkos registered his third goal of the season and the game-winner, while freshman Yoni Aidlberg added insurance with his first career goal. Aidlberg was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for his performance.

With three games remaining, Lehigh has scored 10 goals, three of which belong to senior forward Josh Luchini, who hasn't found the back of the net since a game-tying PK in a 1-1 draw against then-No. 4 West Virginia back on Oct. 5. His last goal in the run of play was at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sept. 14.

Despite allowing two goals against the Tigers on Tuesday, the Lehigh defense has been consistently solid as of late, led by center-backs Spencer Koski and Hassane Diakho. Sophomore goalkeeper Blake Koski registered his first career shutout against Lafayette and currently has a goals against average of 1.33 in seven starts.

Lehigh needs quality matches from here on out, currently in the ninth position in the Patriot League with six points, one behind seventh and eight place Bucknell and Boston University and three behind sixth-place Army West Point (9). The Mountain Hawks lost to Bucknell, beat Army earlier this season and face Boston U. next Saturday in the final home game of the season.

With 12 points, Navy currently holds onto a share of the No. 2 seed in the tournament, three points behind first place Holy Cross. After winning four straight league games, the Midshipmen saw that streak come to a screeching halt, falling to Loyola Maryland on the road, 2-0. The Mids picked up a 3-0 non-league victory on Wednesday vs. Mount St. Mary's.

Offensively, Navy is led by Jacob Williams with five goals and three assists. Baba Kallie also has scored five times and Sidney Paris has four goals and five assists to his credit this season. In net, Tyler Fahning has been the class of the Patriot League in 13 starts, registering a GAA of 0.59 with 31 saves, earning eight shutouts along the way.

The Midshipmen have scored 25 goals this season at a 1.92 goals per game rate, while allowing just eight goals to opponents at 0.62 goals per game.

Navy leads the all-time series over Lehigh, 32-21-7, but the Mountain Hawks have won four of the last five matchups dating back to 2016. The Mids shut out Lehigh back in the spring, 2-0.
