Lehigh Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker to Boston U. on Senior Night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Scoreless late into the second half, Boston University scored on the rebound of a saved penalty kick to account for the game's only goal as the Terriers downed the Lehigh women's soccer team, 1-0 on Friday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. After freshman Abby Trainor made a tremendous save off Jenna Oldham, Eileen Solomon came in to finish the rebound, handing the Mountain Hawks their first Patriot League defeat of the season (now 2-1-1). The Terriers improve to 3-1-0.
Â
BU's goal capped off a second half which saw it control possession and hold a 7-2 edge in shots.
Â
"It was not a good second half," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "We didn't have good energy, we didn't play well and we weren't connected. We have to look at how we came out. The second half was just a poor half of soccer. I don't know if it was just the week with exams or Senior Night or all that combined, but it looked like we were just drained in the second half.
Â
"I thought it was an unfortunate sequence [that led to the penalty kick attempt]," Lambinus continued. "But they had the ball a lot more in the second half and they were creating more chances, so it was bound to happen."
Â
An even first half saw the Terriers hold a 6-4 edge in shots, but only one shot from either side was on goal – coming in the 45th minute, which Trainor easily stopped. Lehigh's best first-half chance came in the eighth minute off the foot of senior Sydney Staples, whose shot from distance hit the crossbar and stayed out.
Â
Boston University controlled play for much of the second half, forcing Trainor to make stops in the 59th and 64th minutes. Lehigh's one shot on goal in the half, and game, was a glittering chance. Freshman Corinne Lyght corralled a loose ball near the top of the box and fired a hard shot towards the left side of the net, but BU goalkeeper Celia Braun made the strong save.
Â
The only other shots on goal came in the 78th minute on the saved PK, which saw Trainor diving to her right, but the Mountain Hawks couldn't clear the rebound. That proved to be the final shot of the game for either side.
Â
"Abby did well tonight," said Lambinus. "We have to make sure our defenders follow up the saved penalty kick and not let them get a second shot on us. We've got to be first to the ball. And honestly, that was indicative of that half. We were second to the ball the whole time."
Â
Final shots were 13-6 in favor of the Terriers while Boston University held a 9-5 edge in corner kicks. Trainor made four saves, while a pair of BU goalkeepers combined for the one.
Â
Before the game, Lehigh recognized its senior class of seven on Senior Night.
Â
"It's a great group of seniors," said Lambinus. "They work hard and they've been together. We have players injured still participating with Abby (Furtmann) and Bridget (Casey) still a big part of our team. They're a great group. I'm sad we weren't able to win on Senior Night.
Â
"We can play better than that," Lambinus continued. "That's the best thing to do. We have a bunch of games left."
