TEMPE, Ariz. – Lehigh opened its spring break trip to Arizona with a pair of losses Saturday on day one of the ASU Invitational at Farrington Stadium. The day began with a tight battle against Big Ten foe Nebraska, with the Cornhuskers eventually prevailing 3-2 in eight innings. Senior Parker Boyd was outstanding in the pitcher's circle against Nebraska, but the Mountain Hawks were unable to get the same pitching support in game two, a 16-0, five inning loss to No. 15/17 Arizona State.
The two losses drop the Mountain Hawks to 6-6 on the season.
Boyd held her own against the power five opponent, allowing just one earned run on seven hits through eight innings of work. She added 13 strikeouts, the second highest single game total of her career, and walked just one, but took the tough-luck loss.
Cam Ybarra did the brunt of the damage for Nebraska (9-13), going 4-for-4 with three doubles. Her one out RBI double in the fourth inning gave the Cornhuskers a 1-0 lead.
Lehigh was held without a hit through the first three innings, but put two batters on in both the fourth and fifth innings, but the Mountain Hawks were unable to push across the tying run.
Sophomore Jaelynn Chesson pulled the Mountain Hawks even with a solo home run to center field with two outs in the sixth inning. The home run was Chesson's third in as many games.
Neither team was able to score in the seventh, so the game went to extra innings, where the international tiebreaker was implemented. Boyd recorded the first two outs in the eighth but a wild pitch on a strikeout cost Lehigh the third out. Lindsey Waljasper's two-run single put the Cornhuskers up 3-1.
Lehigh grabbed a run back in the bottom of the eighth as senior Lexi van Ooyen scored when classmate Mary-Hannah Smith reached on an error, but Olivia Ferrell struck out freshman Emily Cimino to end the game.
The Mountain Hawks' second game of the day saw the nationally-ranked Sun Devils plate 12 runs in the first inning on eight hits and seven walks. Arizona State added three more runs in the second and one in the third. Junior Lainey Stephenson was charged with six earned runs on four hits over 3.2 innings. She struck out four but was hurt by 10 walks and a pair of wild pitches. Chesson made her Lehigh pitching debut but gave up seven earned runs in one-third of an inning.
Lehigh finished with four hits. Sophomore Carley Barjaktarovich had a pair of hits, while van Ooyen and sophomore Karsen O'Rourke also had hits.
Kindra Hackbarth and Jordyn VanHook homered for Arizona State (19-7), while Alynah Torres drove in three runs on a bases-loaded walk and two-run triple.
The Mountain Hawks will continue action at the ASU Invitational on Sunday with games against New Mexico State (2:30 p.m. ET) and Arizona State (7:30 p.m. ET).
