Mountain Hawks head to Arizona for 11 games, including two tournaments over Spring Break

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — For the second straight year the Lehigh softball team will spend spring break in Arizona as the Mountain Hawks will compete in 11 games over eight days on spring break. The trip begins with five games over three days at the ASU Invitational in Tempe. The Mountain Hawks will then move on to Phoenix for six games at the GCU Invitational.

Lehigh will make the trek to Arizona with a 6-4 record after two weekends of play and will face several tough tests, including No. 15/17 Arizona State, which owns a 13-3 home record. Big Ten foes Nebraska and Ohio State will also be on the itinerary for the trip.

The Mountain Hawks went 3-2 at the NC State Invitational last weekend where they won their first of two games against No. 24/25 James Madison for their first win over a ranked team in 14 years. Lehigh also took home two wins against North Carolina A&T after losing its first game of the tournament to host NC State.

Freshman Emily Cimino led Lehigh's offensive charge, going 9-for-16 with seven runs scored, nine RBI and three home runs over five games. Sophomore Jaelynn Chesson added seven runs scored, three RBI and two home runs in 14 at bats, while sophomore Carley Barjaktarovich matched Chesson's seven runs scored and posted two RBI.  Cimino was named Patriot League Player of the Week for her efforts.

Cimino leads Lehigh at the plate through 10 games with a .469 batting average (15-for-32) and four home runs. Barjaktarovich is second at .345 (10-for-29), and senior Mary-Hannah Smith is a close third with a .294 batting average (10-for-34) and eight RBI.

Senior Parker Boyd leads the circle for the Mountain Hawks through 33.1 innings of work. Boyd has held her opponents to a .232 batting average and holds a 2.73 ERA with 29 strikeouts, and allowed only two earned runs to contribute to the team's triumph over James Madison last weekend. Boyd was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week for her performance last Saturday, allowing two earned runs over 10 innings in victories over North Carolina A&T and James Madison.

Lehigh will spend spring break in Arizona for the second consecutive year. The trip also serves as a homecoming for Arizona natives Payton Alsobrooks, Lainey Stephenson and Melissa Fedorka.

The Mountain Hawks will face Nebraska on Saturday (4 p.m. ET) in their first game of the ASU Invitational. Later that night, Lehigh will face its first of two games against tournament host Arizona State (9 p.m. ET). On Sunday, Lehigh will play New Mexico State (2:30 p.m. ET) and close its series against Arizona State (7:30 p.m. ET). The final day of the tournament will present a matchup between Lehigh and Ohio State (4 p.m. ET).

Nebraska will travel to Arizona with a 8-10 record, having defeated No. 21/23 Missouri at last weekend's Mizzou Tournament. Arizona State sits at 16-6 despite its tough schedule, while New Mexico State currently matches ASU's six losses with 11 wins. Ohio State enters this weekend's action at 6-7.

Lehigh's game against Nebraska marks the first matchup between the two sides since 2004, when the Mountain Hawks fell 6-0 in the opening game of the NCAA Lincoln Regional. Lehigh faced Arizona State, New Mexico State and Ohio State in its spring break trip last year. The Sun Devils took two from the Mountain Hawks last year. Lehigh dropped a 9-5 final in its first-ever meeting with New Mexico State and went 0-2 against Ohio State in last year's GCU Invitational.

After a day off Tuesday, Lehigh will head to Phoenix for six games over four days at the GCU Invitational March 11-14. The Mountain Hawks will face South Dakota (5:30 p.m. ET) and Grand Canyon (10 p.m. ET) on Wednesday to kick things off. Following a one-day break on Thursday, Lehigh will regroup for its second game against South Dakota (1 p.m. ET) and second of the week against Ohio State (3:30 p.m. ET) on Friday. Lehigh will play its third and final game against Ohio State (12 p.m. ET) and face Pacific (2:20 p.m. ET) on Saturday to close out tournament action.

Lehigh is 5-0 all-time versus South Dakota, including a 6-2 win to open last year's trip. The Mountain Hawks are 1-3 versus Grand Canyon, splitting two games in 2017 and dropping a doubleheader to the Lopes last year. Lehigh won its only previous meeting with Pacific in 2017.

Following Lehigh's southwestern travels, the Mountain Hawks are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Penn on March 18 before opening Patriot League play at home against Colgate March 21-22.
