Win over New Mexico State highlights Sunday split for Lehigh at ASU Invitational

3/8/2020 10:18:00 PM | Softball

TEMPE, Ariz. – Day two of the ASU Invitational saw the Lehigh softball team pick up its first win of its spring break trip to Arizona. The Mountain Hawks bounced back from two losses on Saturday to defeat New Mexico State in a back-and-forth affair, Sunday at Farrington Stadium. Lehigh ended up with a Sunday split, as No. 15/17 Arizona State scored seven runs over its final two at-bats to beat the Mountain Hawks 9-0 in five innings.

Sunday's split leaves Lehigh at 7-7 on the season.

The win over New Mexico State (14-8) was particularly impressive considering the Aggies had just won three consecutive games over power five opponents Arizona State, Oregon State and Nebraska.

Lehigh out-hit New Mexico State to 10-6 with a number of Mountain Hawks making key offensive contributions. Sophomore Jaelynn Chesson had two of the biggest hits, a go-ahead solo home run in the third inning and a seventh-inning RBI double that put Lehigh in front for good. Sophomore Carley Barjaktarovich and senior Mary-Hannah Smith also had two hit games against the Aggies.

Senior Parker Boyd shook off a rocky start to earn the win, allowing four runs on six hits, while walking four and striking out two.

Lehigh fell behind 2-0 three batters into the bottom on the first after a leadoff single, a walk and a two-run double by Matalasi Faapito, but the Mountain Hawks responded with two runs in the top of the second. Senior Reva Alderman singled with one out and moved to third on a double by sophomore Karsen O'Rourke. An RBI ground out by sophomore Melissa Fedorka plated Alderman and a pinch hit single by senior Lexi van Ooyen brought O'Rourke home with the tying run.

Chesson put the Mountain Hawks in front for the first time as she homered to center field with one out in the third, her fourth home run in her last five games.

New Mexico state reclaimed the lead in the home third inning on Chloe Rivas' two-out, two-run single.

Lehigh tied the game in the sixth when O'Rourke reached second on a pair of errors by the Aggie first baseman and then scored on a single by Fedorka.

Smith's second hit of the game was a one-out double in the top of the seventh. Two batters later, Chesson doubled bringing Smith home with the tying run. An RBI fielder's choice by sophomore Addie Kittel and a bases loaded walk to junior Allyson Dibsie, but Lehigh up 7-4 and Boyd set the Aggies down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

In the rematch with Arizona State, the Sun Devils his three home runs and broke open a 2-0 game with two runs in the fourth and five in the fifth. Home runs from Maddy Hackbarth and Kiara Kennedy in the first and third innings, respectively, put Arizona State up 2-0. Jordyn VanHook brought home a run with a ground out in the fourth, and Kennedy added an RBI double. VanHook capped a five-run fifth inning and ended the game with a three-run home run off of Chesson.

Smith had her second straight two hit game, while Chesson and senior Emily Preble had Lehigh's other two hits. The Mountain Hawks had an opportunity to do some offensive damage in the top of the fourth as hits by Smith and Chesson put the tying runs on base with one out, but Arizona State pitchers worked out of trouble as Lehigh eventually left the bases loaded.

Boyd started again in the circle and allowed two runs on three hits in three innings with a strikeout. Kittel and Chesson pitched the final 1.1 innings.

The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up the ASU Invitational portion of their spring break trip on Monday when they take on Ohio State at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. MST. The game will be the first of three meetings between Lehigh and Ohio State on this trip.
