Chesson homers twice as Lehigh drops ASU Invitational finale to Ohio State

TEMPE, Ariz. – Sophomore Jaelynn Chesson homered twice but Ohio State used a pair of big innings to down the Mountain Hawks 10-2 in five innings in the final game of the ASU Invitational Monday at Farrington Stadium.
The Buckeyes scored four runs in the top of the first, added two in the third and put the game away with a four-run fourth. Sam Hackenbracht went 2-for-2 with four RBIs to lead the Ohio State, as the Buckeyes evened their season record at 9-9.
Chesson delivered her fifth and sixth home runs of the season to post the second multi-home run game for a Mountain Hawk in 2020, matching freshman Emily Cimino's two home run effort against James Madison on Feb. 29. The loss drops Lehigh to 7-8 on the season.
Ohio State scored four runs on four hits and a walk in the top of the first, highlighted by a Niki Carver two-run double and a Hackenbracht single.
Chesson led off the home second with a home run to center, but the Buckeyes answered with two more runs in the third on a two-run double by Hackenbracht. Junior Lainey Stephenson relieved senior Parker Boyd in the fourth but gave up four runs as she struggled to command her pitches.
Another Chesson home run leading off the fourth accounted for Lehigh's second run.
Lehigh finished with five hits with senior Reva Alderman and sophomores Carley Barjaktarovich and Addie Kittel adding singles off winning pitcher Payton Buresch.
Boyd took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in three innings with a walk and a strikeout. Stephenson allowed just one hit over two innings, but walked five while striking out three.
The Mountain Hawks will be off on Tuesday and will move on to Phoenix for their first two games of the GCU Invitational on Wednesday. Lehigh will face South Dakota at 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. MST and host Grand Canyon at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. MST. The Mountain Hawks will face Ohio State two more times at the GCU Invitational.
