STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's track and field team concluded competition on Friday at the UAlbany Winter Classic on a high note. Freshman Zach DeLone broke a school record in the 200m.
Coach Matt Utesch said coming into Friday that the younger athletes would be given an opportunity to perform. DeLone and a bunch of other young Brown and White members took advantage of their opportunity,
Starting with the freshman, DeLone who was already named Rookie of the Week once by the Patriot League, could have another honor to his name in the next couple of days. Once again, DeLone added another win to his name, but this win might have been the bets one yet. The freshman broke a school record in the 200m, along with winning the race. He now holds the school record at 21.69m.
Another freshman who made an impact on Friday was Connor Melko. The cross country runner finished sixth in the mile run with a time of 4:17.02. Senior Joey Kelly had a quality performance in the pole vault. Kelly finished fifth at 4.50m.
The 4x400 relay group of Kerem Ayhan, Harrison Ernst, Douglas Cooke and Evan El-Halawani notched a 14th place finish with a time of 3:25.68. Ayhan also tallied a 15th place finish in the 500m with a time of 1:06.52.
Competing in the triple jump, senior Erik Metz tallied a jump of 12.93m. That jump had him finish in 16th place.
In the 3000m run, cross country powerhouse runners Jeffrey Kirshenbaum and Brad DeMassa compiled 18th and 19th place finishes. Kirshenbaum's time came in at 8:46.22, while DeMassa's time was 8:47.67. Then in the 1000m, freshman Ethan Davis registered a time of 2:37.65 for 18th.
Two Brown and White athletes finished right by each other in the long jump. Ian Scott came in 20th with a jump of 6.52m, while Kevin Lamb came in 22nd at 6.49m.
Up next, Lehigh will compete in the Monmouth Winter College Invite. This two-day event will begin on Friday, February 14, concluding the next day on Saturday.
