WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- For the Lehigh men's track and field team, as the Patriot League Championships inch closer, the better you have to be. Well, being two weeks away from the big one, the Brown and White put forth an impressive two-day showing at the Monmouth Winter Collegiate Invitational.

A plethora of Lehigh athletes stepped up and brought the intensity and passion that head coach Matt Utesch has preached all season.

Starting it off Friday evening, senior Joey Kelly won the pole vault at 4.80m. One thing that stuck out on Kelly's performance was his progression of jumps. Kelly wasn't the lone Mountain Hawk to record a win. Who else might you ask? Well, none other than freshman Zach DeLone. Yes, DeLone rattled off two more wins adding to his already spectacular season. The freshman took first in the 60m (7.00) and the 200m (22.34).

Seth Slavin and Nick Wilson also picked up wins of their own. In the mile run, the cross country leader surpassed his opponents and won with a time of 4:19.48, while sophomore Nick Wilson beat his competition with a time of 8:57.55 in the 3000m.

Jumping to the 60mH, Lehigh showed its depth and its talent. Michael Nardelli, Evan El-Halawani, Trevor Thenga and Kyle Sult all recorded improved times that were good enough to be placed in the top, top half. Nardelli finished second with a time of 8.60, while El-Halawani finished fourth with a time of 8.78. Both Thenga and Sult finished tied for fifth at 8.90.

In the 500m, Harrison Ernst finished second with a time of 1:07.51. Another second-place finish came from Ryan Paradise. In the 1000m, Paradise recorded a time of 2:33.80.

After having high praise from coach Utesch at the beginning of the season, freshman Ian Scott's performance on Saturday is why his coach is so high on him. The freshman took third in the triple jump at 13.40m. Then in the 4x400 relay, the Brown and White group of Scott, Sult, Kerem Ayhan and Nick Crociata took third with a time of 3:36.44. Cross country runner Ethan Davis also registered a third-place finish in the mile run with a time of 4:24.06.

A pair of Lehigh athletes too fourth in their respective events. First, Christian O'Neal had a solid showing this weekend in the high jump. O'Neal finished fourth with a jump of 1.90m. In the 800m, Crociata finished with a time of 1:57.78.

Erik Metz had himself his most consistent event of the season. In the triple jump, Metz finished fifth with a jump of 13.01m, while then recording a sixth-place finish in the long jump at 6.62m.

Finally, Riley LaRiviere notched a sixth-place finish in the shot put at 14.83m.

Up next, Lehigh concludes its regular season with a big showdown against a rival. The Mountain Hawks will compete at the Bucknell Tune-Up next Friday. The event will be eight days before the Patriot League Championships.
