BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team will have its final tune-up before the Patriot League Championships next weekend. The Mountain Hawks will travel to Lewisburg on Friday to compete in the Bucknell Tune-Up. This will conclude the regular season for the Brown and White.
Last time out for Lehigh, the majority of its roster returned to action at the Monmouth Winter Collegiate Invitational. After taking a brief week off, the Brown and White returned to action in a big way. The Mountain Hawks recorded six wins in total throughout the two-day event.
Joey Kelly's progression in his jumps gave the senior the win in the pole vault at 4.80m, while freshman Zach DeLone continued to his winning ways, securing two more victories in the 60m (7.00) and the 200m (22.34).
Seth Slavin registered a victory in the mile run at 4:19.48, while sophomore Nick Wilson beat his competition and won the 3000m at 8:57.55.
"Our team had some good times last weekend. Joey is a kid that is really getting things worked out. He's jumping on really big poles and is ready to go this time of year. We have a lot of guys ranked sixth, however anyone can win, the margin is so small," said head coach Matt Utesch. "Freshman Louis Logsdail jumped great last week. Zach has done a lot of great things and I think what we're going to learn is what kind of competitor he is. I'm interested to see the progression he's going to have to make to get to the podium."
After a grueling schedule to begin the year in which the Mountain Hawks competed in tough competitions in consecutive weeks, Lehigh now has to make sure its athletes are tuning up, and ready to go for next weekend's grand finale, the Indoor Patriot League Championship.
"We need to make sure our athletes have rested up, taken care of their bodies, staying hydrated and having good nutrition," Utesch added. "We have to come to next weekend at full strength. If you don't come in mentally ready and full strength, you loss. We need to be at our absolute best or it's not going to work out for us. There's no place to hide, it's just you. This is the time of year where big performances are needed. Your individual efforts will help the team out.
This weekend in Lewisburg, the Mountain Hawks will be joined by Bloomsburg University, Penn State Harrisburg, Shippensburg University and the Bison. The field events will begin play at 5:00 p.m., while the running events will start at 6:00 p.m.
Up next, Lehigh will host and compete in the 2020 Indoor Patriot League Championships. The two-day event will begin next Saturday.
