BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With its biggest event nearly two full weeks away, the Lehigh men's track and field team preps for the Patriot League Championship with the Monmouth Winter College Invite this weekend. This two-day event is another step in preparing the team for the Patriot League Championships on February 29.
Last time out, the Mountain Hawks participated in the UAlbany Winter Classic last Friday at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island. Despite having a handful of guys not compete, the Brown and White again came away with positives. The biggest positive came from freshman Zach DeLone. Delone, no shy of being recognized this year, broke a school record in the 200m. The freshman notched a win, while also shattering the record with a time of 21.69.
Freshman Connor Melko finished sixth in the mile run with a time of 4:17.02. Senior Joey Kelly had a quality performance in the pole vault at 4.50m. Kelly finished fifth in the event. At the conclusion of the event, Lehigh had four athletes achieve PRs.
Fast forward to this week, the Mountain Hawks only have two more events before the Patriot League Championships, an event that will be inside Rauch Fieldhouse. After this weekend's two-day event, the Brown and White will conclude its indoor regular season at the Bucknell Tune-Up next Friday.
"We have strategically set up our schedule this year so that we'll have a couple of days off before the Patriot League Championships," said head coach Matt Utesch. "The men have worked extremely hard all season so far and we need to do whatever it takes to have our athletes at full strength for the PLC."
The Brown and White have not been shy on competing in 2020. After a slow build from Fast Times Before Finals and the Angry Birds Challenge, Lehigh went up against tough competition at the UPenn Select, Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet, Villanova Invitational and the Bruce Lehane/Scarlet & White at Boston. After consecutive weekends of tough competition, Lehigh rested a majority of its team last the UAlbany Winter Classic. This gave other athletes on the team a chance to step in and perform at a high level.
"With the remaining weeks before the PLC, our biggest goal is to be healthy and to be doing every technical part of every event with the most precision," expressed Utesch. "It is very literal a person by person decision on who competes the next two weekends. We need to do whatever it takes to make sure our athletes are at their best at the PLC."
This weekend's competition will be held at the OceanFirst Bank Center in West Long Branch, New Jersey. Live results will be available HERE. The start of the competition will begin Friday evening and conclude Saturday evening. Some notable teams who will also compete at Monmouth this weekend will be Lafayette, Saint Peter's, Wagner, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Nyack, Montclair State and Wesley.
Up next, Lehigh will travel to the Bucknell Tune-Up next Friday.
