BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a close call against a red-hot opponent, the Lehigh men's basketball team remains home on Wednesday evening to host reigning league champion Colgate. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks dropped a one-point heartbreaker vs. Army West Point on Saturday in a game that saw nine lead changes (all in the second half). The game was in the balance until the second-half clock showed zero, as Lehigh had two shots in the final seconds which would have given the Mountain Hawks the victory.
Â
Down one with the ball in the final 10 seconds, senior Jordan Cohen had a good look at a jumper then sophomore Nic Lynch grabbed his 13th rebound of the game and followed with a hook shot, but that was off the mark as the Black Knights hung on for the 80-79 win. Lynch was the story for Lehigh, scoring a career-high 25 points while tying a career-high 13 rebounds for his fourth-career double-double and first this season. Lynch became the first Mountain Hawk with 25+ points and 13+ rebounds since Tim Kempton on March 5, 2017 in the Patriot League Semifinals at Boston University. He became just the second Patriot League player this season (and first in a league game) to post 25+ points and 13+ rebounds in a game, the other being Max Mahoney of Boston University (38 points, 13 rebounds at Binghamton).
Â
Lynch's previous career high for points was 16. Lynch knocked down his first nine field goals of the evening and finished 10-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Freshman Reed Fenton finished with 18 points, shooting 6-of-10 from 3-point range. He became the first Mountain Hawk with six or more made 3-pointers since Kyle Leufroy also had six on January 19, 2019 vs. Bucknell.
Â
Cohen added 13 points and five assists, shooting 3-of-5 from 3-point range while junior Marques Wilson filled up the stat sheet with nine points, a career-high seven assists, three rebounds and a steal. Saturday's game was highly entertaining for fans, highlighted by the end of the first half. The Mountain Hawks outscored Army 23-19 over the final 5:55 of the stanza to take a 48-44 halftime advantage. Fenton hit four of his 3-pointers in that span, all coming in the span of 2:56. A pair of Army seniors combined for 54 points as Tommy Funk had 33 on 10-of-14 shooting (including 7-of-9 from 3-point range) and Matt Wilson scored 21 on 10-of-18 from the floor. Turnovers weren't too much of an issue for either side as Lehigh finished with 12 and the Black Knights had 11.
Â
At 2-8 in league play, the Mountain Hawks have lost six straight and are currently tied for eighth place in the standings with eight games still remaining. Colgate is the only team Lehigh hasn't faced yet, as the Mountain Hawks will face them for a second time in two weeks on the road. Lehigh is still without two starters in junior James Karnik and freshman Evan Taylor due to injury.Â
Â
The defending Patriot League Champions, Colgate has featured the same starting lineup in 22-of-23 games this season, with all five averaging double-figure points. A pair of preseason All-Patriot League honorees lead the team in scoring, with Jordan Burns averaging 15.3 and Rapolas Ivanauskas coming in at 13.2 (and 7.6 rebounds). Will Rayman is averaging 12.3 points and a team-leading 8.6 rebounds. The Raiders are 17-6 on the season, 8-2 in Patriot League play with the only two losses coming against Lafayette. Colgate is tops in the Patriot League in scoring offense (75.1), fourth in defense (69.4) and first in margin (+5.7). The Raiders are No. 1 in 3-point percentage (37.1) and 3-point percentage against (30.5).
Â
Colgate won both games against the Mountain Hawks last season to take a 54-42 lead in the all-time series. The Raiders have won three of the last four overall, this after five straight Lehigh victories. Lehigh has won three of its last five vs. Colgate at home (including a 77-72 win in the Patriot League Quarterfinals), but lost the last two. The first-ever meeting between the two sides was in 1909-10, a 25-24 Colgate win. Lehigh's first victory was in 1961-62 by a 72-71 final.
Â
Following Wednesday's game, Lehigh hits the road on Saturday to face the archrival Leopards. Opening tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
