Colgate pulls away from Mountain Hawks in the second half

2/5/2020 9:56:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's basketball team played neck-and-neck played a tight first half against first-place Colgate, but the Mountain Hawks' offense went ice cold in the second and the Raiders took advantage for an 81-51 win on Wednesday evening in Stabler Arena. Junior Marques Wilson led Lehigh's offense with 12 points while sophomore Jeameril Wilson had 10 points, all in the first half. Senior Ed Porter tied a career-high eight points, all coming in the second half.

"We ended up falling a little bit behind at the half and I thought with a good showing in the second, we could put ourselves within a couple possessions and make a good fight of it," said Lehigh head coach Brett Reed. "I thought Jordan Burns had a few really strong individual plays. When it's all said and done, we had opportunities that we didn't convert, we got discouraged when they didn't go in and we hurt ourselves with turnovers. Ultimately they had 16 extra shot attempts than us. When you start to quantify the turnovers, the missed opportunities by us and then even some offensive boards by Ivanauskas particularly in the second half, that's the separation in the game."

One bright spot for the Mountain Hawks was their defense against reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Rapolas Ivanauskas, who was held to eight points on 3-of-11 shooting. Colgate's second leading scorer was limited to 11 points on just 2-of-10 from the field.

The teams went back-and-forth for much of the opening minutes, as Jeameril Wilson helped the Mountain Hawks to early leads of 3-2 and 8-5 with a pair of early 3-pointers.
Colgate retook the lead, but Lehigh responded to take leads of 12-11 then 15-14 following a Marques Wilson trey with 14:23 on the first-half clock.
The Raiders responded with a 12-2 run to take a nine-point, 26-17 advantage, led by six points from Keegan Records during the run.

The Mountain Hawks answered with six consecutive points, capped off by a Nic Lynch layup to pull Lehigh within 26-23 with 6:21 remaining in the first half.

That's as close as Lehigh would come, however, as the Raiders slowly increased their lead over the ensuing minutes. Marques Wilson scored Lehigh's final five first-half points, but a Records layup gave Colgate a 40-30 advantage, which proved to be the halftime margin.

The first few minutes of the second half saw each side score six points, as a Porter layup pulled the Mountain Hawks within 46-36 with 16:35 on the clock. Colgate responded with a big 22-2 run to take a 68-38 advantage midway through the second half and the Raiders cruised from there.

For the game, the Mountain Hawks shot 35.4 percent from the field (17-of-48) and 28.6 percent from 3-point range (4-of-14). Colgate finished at 43.8 percent (28-of-64) and 38.5 percent from behind the arc (10-of-26). The Raiders won the battle of the boards, 37-33.

"Over the course of what we were doing over the last week, I saw a step forward and a big improvement," said Reed. "It needs to be a demand that we don't take a step backwards, we don't fall back and we understand what we're trying to accomplish and the way in which we're trying to play. There is a maturity level that comes with those experiences to understand how it all fits together. That's a lesson that we need to learn."

Next up, Lehigh hits the road on Saturday to face the archrival Leopards. Opening tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
