BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Two games separate the Lehigh women's basketball team from the Patriot League Tournament, and nothing is guaranteed at this point, as the Mountain Hawks fight for a bye into the quarterfinal round for the third straight season.
On Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Stabler Arena, Lehigh hosts Loyola on Senior Day presented by Lehigh Valley Hotel and Conference Center.
The Mountain Hawks will play for chance to get that quarterfinal bye, as long as Holy Cross defeated American on Saturday afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks have struggled as of late, falling in three straight games including eight of their last 11.
Lehigh had its chances to get the victory over Boston University Wednesday night, as the defense did its job for the most of the game, holding the Terriers under the 50-point threshold.
Playing without key senior Camryn Buhr, the Mountain Hawks relied on another explosive performance out of sophomore guard Megan Walker, who converted on six of her seven field goal attempts, going 4-for-4 from beyond-the-arc for a game-high 16 points. Making the start in place of Buhr, junior forward Mariah Sexe scored eight points with seven rebounds and two blocks in her 24 minutes on the floor. Senior guard Hannah Hedstrom scored seven points to go along with eight boards and three assists, coming up clutch to give Lehigh a three-point advantage late in the fourth quarter.
Boston University didn't have an answer for Lehigh's defense for most of the game, until a foul was committed with 0.8 seconds on the clock, putting Maren Durant on the line to shoot two free throws, trailing by a single point. She made both, giving the Terriers the home victory.
Sunday will mark the regular season home finale for the Mountain Hawks, as seniors Cameryn Benz, Buhr, Paige Galiani, Gena Grundhoffer and Hedstrom will be recognized with a pre-game ceremony for Senior Day.
Loyola heads into the weekend just looking to gain ground and get a home game in the Patriot League Tournament during the first round. The Greyhounds are currently seeded eighth, two games behind seventh-place American and three games behind sixth-place Lehigh.
Loyola is coming off a 10-point victory over Navy at home on Wednesday night, snapping a three-game losing streak after losses to Lafayette, Army West Point and Colgate.
Alexis Gray scored a season-high 19 points, while Emily McAteer added 16 points off the bench in a 64-54 home victory over Navy on Wednesday. Gray hit 6-of-13 shots from the field and 6-of-7 free throw attempts. Her previous season-best was a 17-point effort in Loyola's first game against Navy on Feb. 1.
McAteer (6-9 FG, 2-3 3FG) finished two points shy of her season high, reaching double figures for a seventh time this season (first since Jan. 11). Loyola shot 47.1% (24-51) from the field and 42.9% (6-14) from 3-point range while improving its record at Reitz Arena to 6-6 this season.
Senior Stephanie Karcz is one of the NCAA's all-time leaders in steals, as she is currently just nine away from passing Dawn Staley (454) for ninth all-time.
A fun fact about Loyola's star player, Karcz is one of two players in the country with more than one triple double this season, joining Oregon star Sabrina Ionescu, who has eight this season. Karcz has two to her name in 2019-20, and four for her career.
The Lehigh-Loyola matchup dates all the way back to the 1981-82 season, but the Patriot League moniker began during the 2013-14 campaign.
All-time, Lehigh is 13-7 against the Greyhounds and 8-4 during the Patriot League era.
The Mountain Hawks have claimed the last four matchups against Loyola, with Lehigh getting the victory on Jan. 5, 55-53. Benz hit a last-second shot with 1.5 seconds left to get the win for the Mountain Hawks.
Tickets can be purchased at the box office prior to the start of the game, online at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME.
Sunday's game will be broadcast live on Service Electric 2 Sports with Steve Degler and Jim Wills on the call. It will also be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
Matt Markus will provide the call on Fox Sports Radio 1230/1320 AM, 94.7 FM with pre-game coverage getting underway at 3:45 p.m.
