BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Sibel Can of the Lehigh women's tennis team was named Patriot League Player of the Week on Tuesday, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The senior leader was key in Saturday's 6-1 win over Duquesne.
Can played the No. 1 singles match and defeated Duquesne's Laurel Shmansky in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. The senior leader also picked up a No. 1 doubles win against the top Dukes' tandem, 6-3.
The Mountain Hawks are off to their best start in over 15 years and Can is a big reason why. She is currently 4-3 at the top spot in singles, while tallying a 4-1 record in doubles with her partner, Paula Gonzalez.
Can has also defeated Stony Brooks' Jamie Wei in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, while also winning a three-setter against Julia Gabay of Marist, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
The Weston, Florida native will have two more shots this weekend to add to her resume, as the Mountain Hawks will play host to NJIT on Friday and Buffalo on Saturday.
