BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 11 Lehigh has competed just once since Jan. 18, but the Mountain Hawks will crank things up at the end of the dual meet season with three duals in eight days, beginning Friday night with a visit to EIWA rival Bucknell. The Mountain Hawks have won eight consecutive duals with the last five of those wins coming against conference foes. In its most recent action, Lehigh pulled away from Army West Point for a 24-9 victory, Jan. 31 in West Orange, N.J. The Mountain Hawks and Black Knights were tied 9-9 after six bouts before a second period pin by senior Jordan Kutler sparked a 4-0 Lehigh run to close out the dual. Lehigh will travel to face a Bucknell team that is 8-1 against EIWA opponents this season and has won seven straight duals against conference opponents.
It was a special night at West Orange High School on Jan. 31, as Army West Point celebrated its senior class including the late cadet-wrestler C.J. Morgan. The Black Knights battled Lehigh tough through six bouts, before the Mountain Hawks claimed the final four to post an important 24-9 victory. Tied 9-9 after six bouts, senior Jordan Kutler secured a key late second period fall against Ben Harvey to put Lehigh up by six. Junior Chris Weiler followed with his third win over a higher-ranked opponent in January. Victories from juniors Jake Jakobsen and Jordan Wood in the final two bouts capped Lehigh's eighth straight dual win.
Five Mountain Hawks appear in the latest InterMat rankings, led by senior Jordan Kutler, who is ranked third at 174. Lehigh also has six wrestlers ranked by FloWrestling, seven by Amateur Wrestling News and eight by The Open Mat. In addition to Kutler, Brandon Paetzell (125), Josh Humphreys (157), Chris Weiler (184) and Jordan Wood (285) are ranked across the board by all four outlets. Junior Nick Farro (133), sophomore Jimmy Hoffman (149) and junior Jake Jakobsen (197) are ranked by two. Four of Lehigh's ranked wrestlers are rated in the top 10 in their respective weight classes.
Bucknell brings a 9-4 dual record into a weekend that includes a visit from Army West Point on Sunday after Lehigh visits on Friday. The Bison boast an impressive 8-1 EIWA dual mark, with the one loss coming at the hands of Navy. Bucknell's other three dual losses came against nationally-ranked Iowa State and North Carolina along with Northern Illinois. The Bison have won seven straight EIWA duals, including victories over Binghamton and American last weekend. Two of Bucknell's probable starters appear in the first NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings. Sophomore Zach Hartman was an EIWA finalist at 157 last year and now resides at 165, where he is also the only Bison grappler ranked by InterMat. Drew Phipps is a top 33 wrestler at 197. Dan Wirnsberger is in his 15th season as Bucknell's head coach.
Lehigh and Bucknell will meet for the 15th time. The Mountain Hawks won the first nine duals in the series and the last four. Bucknell's only win in the series came in the 2013-14 season-opener. Lehigh will compete in Davis Gym for the first time since 2013. The last two Lehigh-Bucknell duals in Lewisburg were contested at Sojka Pavilion.
