BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off a weekend away from competition, No. 12 Lehigh puts its seven dual winning streak on the line as the Mountain Hawks will battle No. 19 Army West Point Friday at West Orange High School in New Jersey. Army moved its senior night match to West Orange to honor the late cadet-wrestler C.J. Morgan, who passed away last summer due to injuries sustained from a military vehicle accident in the U.S. Military Academy's training area. In its last action, Lehigh won a pair of home duals against EIWA opponents, as the Mountain Hawks beat American 33-8 on Jan. 17 and then knocked off Navy 23-9 the following afternoon. The Navy win was the 200th dual victory of Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro's career combining his time at Maryland and Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks and Black Knights combined have 17 wrestlers who appear in the first NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings, which were released late last week.
The NCAA released the first of four Coaches' Panel rankings for the 2019-20 season on January 24. The rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. A panel of coaches ranked the top 33 in each weight class with the Mountain Hawks well represented. Lehigh has wrestlers ranked in the top 33 in nine of 10 weight classes, led by senior Jordan Kutler, who is ranked third at 174. Junior Brandon Paetzell (125), sophomore Josh Humphreys (157) and junior Jordan Wood (285) are all in the top 10 in their respective weight classes.
Last time out, Lehigh returned to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for the first time in nearly two months and claimed a pair of EIWA victories, downing American 33-8 and Navy 23-9. Junior Chris Weiler kicked off the American win with his second ranked victory in as many weeks and the Mountain Hawks scored bonus points in five of eight victories. The following day, Lehigh won seven bouts against Navy to win the 100th meeting of Lehigh's second most-contested series. The victory was also the 200th of Pat Santoro's head coaching career. The Mountain Hawks have now won seven straight duals.
Five Mountain Hawks appear in the latest InterMat rankings, led by senior Jordan Kutler, who is ranked third at 174. Lehigh also has six wrestlers ranked by FloWrestling, nine by Amateur Wrestling News and eight by The Open Mat. In addition to Kutler, Brandon Paetzell (125), Josh Humphreys (157), Chris Weiler (184) and Jordan Wood (285) are ranked across the board by all four outlets. Junior Nick Farro (133) is ranked by three of the four, while senior Ryan Pomrinca (141) and junior Jake Jakobsen (197) are ranked by two.
In the midst of another strong dual meet season, Army West Point has moved its Senior Night meet to West Orange High School, to honor late wrestler C.J. Morgan, an alumnus of West Orange, who passed away last summer due to injuries sustained from a military vehicle accident in the U.S. Military Academy's training area. The Black Knights are 8-2 in duals and have won four straight, including a 26-9 victory at Lock Haven last weekend. Army's lone losses came against top 10-ranked Wisconsin and North Carolina. The only school to place all 10 entrants at last year's EIWA Championships, Army has eight wrestlers ranked in the initial NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings. The highest-ranked Black Knight is Markus Hartman, who comes in at No. 9 at 157. Five Black Knights appear in the InterMat top 20, with Army represented at five of the final six weight classes. Kevin Ward is in his sixth season as head coach at Army West Point.
Army is Lehigh's fifth most-often wrestled opponent, trailing just Penn State, Navy, Cornell and Syracuse. The Brown and White have won 55 of 67 duals with three ties. Lehigh is 18-1-1 in its last 20 with Army, with the Black Knights' lone win during that span coming in 2008 at West Point. Lehigh and Army are meeting for the fourth consecutive season after a break in the series from 2009 until 2017.
Friday's dual begins at 7 p.m. from Tarnoff Gymnasium at West Orange High School in New Jersey. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 for Adults and $5 for children. All proceeds benefit the Chris Morgan Foundation. Army will also stream video of the dual for free at GoArmyWestPoint.com/Watch. There will be no Lehigh audio coverage of the dual.
The Mountain Hawks will have another off weekend from competition, following the Army match. Lehigh's next dual will be a visit to EIWA rival Bucknell on Friday, Feb. 14. That dual will kick off a stretch of three duals over eight days to wrap-up the dual meet season. Lehigh will travel to the Palestra to wrestle Penn on Thursday, Feb. 20, before closing out the dual season the following evening when the Mountain Hawks welcome Arizona State to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for a 7 p.m. match. The Mountain Hawks will host the 116th EIWA Championships, March 6-7 at Stabler Arena.
