Mountain Hawks look to get back to winning ways vs. American Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh women's basketball team looks to snap a three-game skid when it welcomes American to Stabler Arena Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
It's been a bleak period of time for Lehigh over the last week and a half, unable to get much going on offense in its last three games, currently on a three-game losing streak, the team's longest so far in 2019-20.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a tough loss at archrival Lafayette Saturday afternoon. Lehigh had led by 10 after the first quarter, but were out-scored 38-23 by the Leopards in the final three frames. The loss snapped Lehigh's eight-game win streak over the team from Easton and moved the Mountain Hawks down in a tie for third place in the Patriot League standings.
In its last three games, Lehigh has averaged just 53.3 points per game, well below the team's average of 62.9 for the year. The Mountain Hawks have also lost by an average margin of 15.3 points per game.
After starting the Patriot League slate 5-0 and in first place, the Mountain Hawks are now 5-3 with two straight home losses after coming into the game against Bucknell unbeaten at Stabler Arena.
Despite falling, Lehigh had three players score in double figures with Cameryn Benz (14), Megan Walker (10) and Emma Grothaus (10) all getting above that mark. Camryn Buhr was just a point shy of a double-double after finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds. The Mountain Hawks struggled to shoot the ball, shooting just 32.7 percent (18-for-55) from the floor and 31.6 percent (6-for-19) from beyond-the-arc. More surprising was the team's lack of production from the foul line, shooting 47.8 percent (11-for-23).
League play has brought tough defenses to go up against the Lehigh offense, with the Mountain Hawks shooting just 36.7 percent from the field and 30.2 percent from the 3-point line in those games.
Coming off a tough loss on the road at Colgate, American looks to get back on track and get revenge against Lehigh. The Eagles have dropped four of their last five games starting with that one-point defeat to Lehigh back in early January.
A win for American would get the Eagles back into the hunt in the middle of the pack in the Patriot League standings.
Against the Raiders, the Eagles forced overtime at Cotterell Court, but fell a point shy of pulling off the win.
Three American players finished in double scoring figures with Jade Edwards leading the way with 17 points. Kaitlyn Marenyi added 13 while Emily Fisher finished with 10 points. Morgan Bartner scored nine points to go along with 11 rebounds.
The Eagles ended up shooting 39.7 percent (23-for-58) from the floor, 30 percent (6-for-20) from beyond-the-arc and 83.3 percent (10-for-12) from the free throw line.
American and Colgate were tied up in the rebound column with 39 each, while the Eagles turned the ball over 18 times and forced just 12 Raider turnovers.
In the four American losses in the last five points, the Eagles have scored an average of just 56.8 points per game, losing by an average margin of 10 points in those games.
There is a long history between Lehigh and American dating all the way back to the 1982-83 season. The Eagles lead the all-time pairing, 14-33, with an 12-23 mark in Patriot League contests.
Before the win on Jan. 11, the Mountain Hawks fell in seven straight matchups to the Eagles dating back to Jan. 7, 2017.
The win in Washington was one of just three games Lehigh has won against American since Feb. 13, 2013.
Lehigh has not beaten American at Stabler Arena since Mar. 3, 2010, when the Mountain Hawks topped the Eagles, 58-42 to win their third Patriot League Championship in program history. Since then, AU are winners of 10 straight games at Stabler.
Wednesday's game will air live on Service Electric 2 Sports and for free through the Patriot League Network. A live audio stream on Lehighsports.com will be available with Matt Markus on the call.
