BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As the spring semester begins and the Lehigh softball team prepares to begin preseason practice this week, head coach Fran Troyan offers a glimpse at the future with the addition of five student-athletes who will join the Mountain Hawks next fall.
Lehigh's class of 2024 is a versatile one. Three of the five newcomers figure to play multiple positions upon arrival on campus next summer.
Geographically, the class features two Pennsylvania natives (one eastern and one western), plus student-athletes from Illinois, Tennessee and Virginia.
"This is an important class because we'll be losing a tremendous class and cast of characters after this season," Troyan said. "We feel like this class a chance to really fill in for the graduating class right away. They're a very talented group. A very hard-working group, and a group that has already began to bond as a class."
The Mountain Hawks reached the championship round of the Patriot League Tournament for the third consecutive season in 2019 and enter the 2020 season looking to win their first title since 2017. Lehigh returns both of its 2019 All-Patriot League selections for the 2020 season and a total of three players who have garnered all-league recognition. The Mountain Hawks will begin the 2020 campaign at the Citrus Blossom Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla. Feb. 14-16.
More information on the class of 2024 can be found below:
Brooke Cannon • IF/UT • Virginia Beach, Va. • Engineering
Brooke Cannon joins the Mountain Hawks from Kellam High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is a standout pitcher for Kellam but figures to contribute as an infielder for Lehigh. Cannon was named the All-Tidewater Softball Player of the Year in 2019, the highest honor for a softball player in her area. She is a two-time team MVP. In 2019, Cannon was named Regional Co-Player of the Year, first team all-region as a pitcher and second team all-state as a pitcher. She played second base primarily in her first two high school seasons and was a two-time first team all-region; two-time second team All-Tidewater; and 2017 second team all-state performer. Cannon is a career .552 hitter with 23 extra base hits, 31 RBIs and 28 runs scored. She plays her travel softball for Virginia Legends 18U Premier.
Troyan on Cannon: "Brooke has played a national-level schedule for a long time. Even though she is an all-state pitcher in Virginia, she will likely play in the infield for us. We've had an opportunity to follow her for a long time and believe that she has a great skill set that will allow her to come in and help us right away."
Ansley Dambach • UT • Franklin, Tenn. • Health
A versatile, athletic player, Ansley Dambach hails from Franklin, Tennessee and attends Battle Ground Academy. She initially came on to Lehigh's radar through former Lehigh quarterback Scott Semptimphelter '93, who coaches football at the school. Dambach plays her travel softball for the East Cobb Bullets out of Georgia. She pitches for her high school team, but will fill a true utility role for the Mountain Hawks. Dambach is a two-time All-District selection and 2019 District MVP and was named to the All-Region Tournament team in each of the last two years. She is a career .415 hitter with 14 home runs, 82 RBIs, 14 stolen bases and a .502 on-base percentage.
Troyan on Dambach: "Scott (Semptimphelter) had promised that Ansley was a great athlete and she certainly is a tremendous athlete. Ansley is just starting to play travel softball at an elite level and we're very excited about her versatility and athleticism and are really looking forward to seeing how she can grow as a player. Her athleticism will allow her to compete at a strong level right away."
Bella Egizio • OF/IF • Wilmington, Ill. • Arts and Sciences
Speedy and versatile, Bella Egizio comes to Lehigh from Wilmington High School in Illinois. Another versatile performer, Egizio could contribute in the infield or outfield. She is a four-year starter for Wilmington and plays her travel softball for the New Lenox Lightning Gold. At the high school level, Egizio was an all-conference and all-state honoree as a junior. Off the field, she is a three-year All-Academic award recipient, a three-year member of the student council and a two-year member of the math team.
Troyan on Egizio: "We've been following her for a long time. We were immediately drawn by her speed and base stealing ability. That's an area where she'll be able to help us out right away. She will be a tough out."
Amanda Greaney • C • Lansdale, Pa. • Engineering
Catcher Amanda Greaney will make the relatively short trip from Lansdale to Bethlehem. She attends North Penn High School and plays her travel softball for the Rock Gold-Rick Waye. Greaney was a first team all-area honoree and garnered second team all-state honors last season. As a junior, Greaney batted .383 with 31 hits, 22 runs and 23 RBIs. She is a career .348 hitter at North Penn with 78 hits, 59 runs and 61 RBIs. Greaney holds North Penn records for single season (7) and career (15) home runs. She comes from a high school program that won three straight conference titles and has made two straight state tournament appearances.
Troyan on Greaney: "Amanda reminded us in the recruiting process of Liz Lucas '13, as a catcher, a hitter and a leader. If she can have any type of career similar to Liz Lucas, she'll be a tremendous player for us. And we fully expect that."
Katelyn Young • P • Saegertown, Pa. • Arts and Sciences
Left-handed pitcher Katelyn Young comes to Lehigh from Saegertown, Pennsylvania and Saegertown High School. She plays her travel softball for the Erie Frost and has worked with well-regard pitching instructor Hugh Hillhouse. A three-time first team all-region honoree, Young was her region's Pitcher of the Year in each of the last two seasons and added Player of the Year honors in 2019. Young was first team all-district as a junior and is a two-time PIAA AA All-State honoree, earning second team honors as a freshman and first team laurels as a junior.
Troyan on Young: "Katelyn is a left-handed pitcher who has the rare combination of speed and movement. She has been fortunate to have received some great pitching instruction that Steph Covelle will be able to build upon. We think has a chance to be really special for us."
