BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's basketball team looks to continue its recent home success when the Mountain Hawks return to Stabler Arena on Wednesday to host Navy. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on Stadium's national channel and the Patriot League Network. The Mountain Hawks have won their first two home games in league play, and four of their last five in Stabler Arena overall. Lehigh and Navy are two of four teams tied for fourth in the Patriot League standings at 2-2.
The Mountain Hawks and Midshipmen are set to square off for the second time in 13 days after Navy earned a 64-58 win in the league opener for both sides on Jan. 2. That marked Lehigh's eighth straight defeat, but since, the team has bounced back with two wins over its last three games. Most recently, the Mountain Hawks picked up a wire-to-wire victory over American on Saturday, winning 82-73.
Lehigh jumped out to a 15-2 lead and wouldn't look back. American pulled as close as two on multiple occasions, but the Mountain Hawks erased much doubt with a 12-0 second-half run to turn a two-point advantage into a 14-point, 53-39 lead with 12:22 remaining. The Eagles wouldn't pull any closer than seven the rest of the way. Freshman Evan Taylor scored eight of those points during the run, as he finished the game with 14 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Along with his 13 points and six boards at Boston University Wednesday, Taylor was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday. It marked Taylor's first-career weekly award and the Mountain Hawks' first weekly honor of the season.
Senior Jordan Cohen led the offense with 25 points, just one from tying a season high and his fourth game of the season with 20+ points. Cohen shot 8-of-12 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line, also tying a career-high eight assists and posting five rebounds and two steals. In the process, Cohen moved from 34th in program history all the way to 31st for career points (moving from 1,055 to 1,080). Two others recorded double-figure points; junior Marques Wilson had 15 points (his fourth straight game with double-figure points) while freshman Reed Fenton recorded 14.
Lehigh did have 16 turnovers compared to just nine for American, but the Mountain Hawks were efficient offensively, knocking down a season-high 53.8 percent of their field goals (28-of-52) while holding American to 37.5 percent (27-of-72). Lehigh's 82 points scored marked a season high against a Division I opponent.
The Mountain Hawks continued their impressive recent success against American, winning their 10th straight game vs. the Eagles. In seven of those contests, Lehigh never trailed. Overall, the Mountain Hawks have only trailed for 19:38 over those 10 games (405 minutes), which is only 4.8 percent of the time.
Navy stands 8-7 overall, 2-2 in Patriot League play. The Midshipmen have alternated wins and losses over their last six games, most recently dropping a 70-63 final at home vs. Colgate. Navy's league victories are over Lehigh (at home) and Bucknell (on the road). Cam Davis leads the Mids in scoring, averaging 16.0 points per game. John Carter Jr. comes in at 12.4 while Greg Summers is averaging 9.8 and a team-high 6.9 rebounds per contest. Navy's scoring offense (61.5) is last in the Patriot League, but the Midshipmen are first in scoring defense (59.3). Second in the league in scoring defense (Lafayette) has allowed nine more points per game than the Mids.
Lehigh won both meetings against Navy last season to pull within 49-32 in the all-time series, but the Midshipmen won the first matchup this year, 64-58. Despite Navy winning three of the last five and four of the last six, Lehigh has still won 16 of the last 21 all-time meetings heading into Wednesday's game. The teams first met in 1910-11, a 31-24 Navy victory. Lehigh's first win was in 1925-26 by a 25-23 final.
Following Wednesday's game, Lehigh hits the road for two straight, beginning Saturday at Bucknell. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
