Offensive outburst not enough in 88-83 loss to Navy

1/15/2020 10:59:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two Mountain Hawks eclipsed 20 points for the first time since last January, but it wasn't enough as Navy scored 50 second-half points to down the Lehigh men's basketball team, 88-83 on Wednesday evening in Stabler Arena. Senior Jordan Cohen led the way with a season-high 28 points, which included 5-of-5 3-point shooting. Junior Marques Wilson added a season-high 21 points and eight rebounds. However, Mids' freshmen Daniel Deaver and Sean Yoder combined for 44 points, which proved too much for the Mountain Hawks to overcome as they fell to 2-3 in Patriot League play.

"That's not the way we've played defensively throughout the year and I'm really disappointed," said Lehigh head coach Brett Reed. "Unfortunately, Navy was able to get on a roll. I thought Deaver gave them a huge shot in the arm. We made some adjustments, but then they beat us with one-on-one plays. Throughout the course of the season, we've started pretty strong and we've continued to show that fight and resiliency. Today, for whatever reason, the coaching staff – myself included – was not able to get them to play to the level we needed."

Cohen scored 21 of his 28 points in the second half, with 14 points (including four 3-pointers) coming in the first 5:57 of the stanza. He also tied a career-high eight assists for a second straight game. Wilson finished 7-of-13 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Sophomore Nic Lynch impressed as well, scoring 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting while adding six boards.

Deaver finished with 25 points (18 coming in the first half) while Yoder tallied 19 (14 of which came after halftime). Luke Loehr scored 14 points, all in the second half.

"I thought they out-toughed us," said Reed. "They got big contributions, particularly in the second half, from Loehr. Between Loehr and Yoder in the second half, that really hurt us."

Navy jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead, but Lynch single-handedly went on an 8-0 run to give the Mountain Hawks a 9-8 advantage with 14:22 left in the first half.

An Ed Porter layup gave the Mountain Hawks a 12-11 advantage, but the Mids responded with a 13-2 run to take a 24-14 lead with 8:59 remaining in the first.

Lehigh came right back with seven straight points as a Reed Fenton corner 3-pointer began a stretch of three straight possessions with Mountain Hawks treys. Wilson and Cohen followed to help Lehigh within 29-27 with 4:13 on the first-half clock. Navy opened a seven-point advantage in the final minute, but Cohen knocked down a long 2-pointer as the first half expired to pull within 38-34 after 20 minutes of play.

Scoring picked up early in the second with Navy holding a 16-14 edge before the first media timeout. Cohen kept the Mountain Hawks within striking distance with his 14 points in the first 6:27 of the half, as his fourth 3-pointer in that stretch pulled Lehigh within 59-56 with 13:33 on the clock.

Navy eventually reopened a double-figure lead as a Yoder trey made the score 73-63 with 7:29 remaining. The Mountain Hawks had one last run in them, scoring the next six points to pull within 73-69 with 4:19 on the clock. However, Navy scored five points in the span of 32 seconds to retake a nine-point lead, on the way to victory.

For the game, the Mountain Hawks shot 49.2 percent from the field (29-of-59), including a season-best 60.0 percent from 3-point range (9-of-15). Navy finished at 50.9 percent (29-of-57) and 45.5 percent from long range (10-of-22). The Mids held a 32-29 edge in rebounds. The Mountain Hawks made a season-low seven turnovers in the win.

"Give Marques Wilson a lot of credit," said Reed. "Eight boards was critical. There were a lot of hard, tough balls he had to fight for on the glass and Marques brought it. His numbers prove he had an efficient night, played hard and helped us. When you look at Nic Lynch and Marques Wilson, those two guys were positive in the plus/minus when they were out there. That means they're positively influencing the game. We want to be able to recognize, on a night when we fell short, those guys made positive contributions in the plus/minus, which ultimately affects the win column."

Lehigh now hits the road for two straight, beginning Saturday at Bucknell. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
