BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a highly-productive preseason, the Lehigh field hockey team opens its 2019 campaign on Friday when it travels to Rider to face the Broncs. Gametime is set for 4 p.m. The Mountain Hawks have enjoyed success in recent season openers, having won twice in the first three seasons of head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer's tenure at Lehigh. Dallmeyer's first game at Lehigh came against Rider, a 2-1 Mountain Hawks' victory.
Â
Lehigh defeated Rider in the 2016 opener (2-1), beat LIU Brooklyn in 2017 (1-0) and fell in a hard-fought contest vs. Lock Haven last year (1-0). The Mountain Hawks ended last season on a high note, winning two of their last five games – vs. Colgate and at Towson – while playing some close contests in that stretch as well. Included was a 4-2 defeat to Rider which saw Lehigh within striking distance all game.
Â
Junior Lenke Havas is Lehigh's top returner after garnering first team All-Patriot League and second team All-Region a season ago. She became just the fourth All-Region honoree in program history, finishing with six goals and a school record-tying nine assists.
Â
Rider finished last season 11-8, 4-1 in the MAAC. With the Northeast Conference being reestablished, the Broncs have returned to the NEC where they enjoyed success for many years. Rider returns its top six point-getters from a season ago, led by Tess Coorens (27 points: 12 goals, three assists) and Carly Brosious (25 points: 10 goals, five assists). Tess van Ommeren dished a team-leading 11 assists, while adding five goals for 21 points. Marion Waterkeyn had 21 points as well (eight goals, five assists). Lena Vandam returns after playing every minute in goal, tallying a 1.91 goals against average and 75.9 save percentage.
Â
The all-time series between Lehigh and Rider is tied, 18-18-1. The teams have played in three of the last four seasons, with the Broncs winning twice. The last time they played at Rider was in the 2015 season opener, a 3-0 Rider victory. Last season, Leah Mullery scored twice for Lehigh, pulling the Mountain Hawks within 3-2 with less than 15 minutes remaining, but Rider responded with an insurance goal for the 4-2 final.
Â
Following Friday's game, Lehigh returns home for three straight games, hosting Towson on Friday, Sept. 6 then Richmond and Georgetown the following weekend.
