Lehigh Football Preview: Quarterbacks
8/19/2019 11:42:00 AM | Football
Throughout the month of August Lehighsports.com will be taking a position-by-position look at the 2019 Lehigh football team. The Mountain Hawks, under the direction of first-year head coach Tom Gilmore, opened preseason camp on August 1 and are preparing for the 2019 season-opener August 31 versus Saint Francis at Goodman Stadium.
We continue with a look at the quarterbacks.
Quarterbacks Coach/Offensive Coordinator Scott Brisson has five quarterbacks in camp as the Mountain Hawks look to replace Brad Mayes, a two-year starter, four-year contributor and 2017 first team All-Patriot League honoree. The most experienced member of the group is senior Tyler Monaco, who appeared in three games last year, including an opening-day start, and threw a touchdown pass at Navy.
Â
"Tyler was a real leader in the spring and has continued that throughout the summer," Gilmore said. "Being a senior, he has been around the program the most. He has been around the system the most. He is very comfortable with the X and O part of things, but he hasn't had that on-field experience. He didn't play as much as you'd like to see your starter coming in. He's looking at this as a great opportunity.
Â
"He does a lot of different things well," Gilmore continued. "His versatility is one of his strengths and his intelligence is one of his strengths. He's a tough football player. He's not going to let a situation get him down. He's going to come back the next play if something doesn't go right. That has a huge impact on the offense and on the team. He's going to wind up being one of the best leaders that we have."
Â
Junior Addison Shoup served as Lehigh's holder in 2018 and possesses the best combination of running and passing ability among the returning quarterbacks. Sophomore Alec Beesmer enjoyed a strong spring practice segment and performed well in the Brown and White game.
Â
"Addison is probably the most athletic of that quarterback group," Gilmore said. "He did a really good job running at times when the situation warranted in the spring. That was an aspect to his game that I wasn't aware of. Beesmer was probably the most productive of all three quarterbacks in the actual spring game, and had a really good spring. There will be a lot of competition there. Those guys are all very competitive. That competition is going to help them improve each other during the course of the preseason."
Â
Lehigh has also brought in a pair of freshman signal callers in Nigel Summerville from North Carolina and Tommy Lewis from The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut.
