Mountain Hawks continue to sustain success with fifth-place finish at Patriots

WORCESTER, Mass. – For a second straight season, the Lehigh women's rowing team qualified all three of its boats for the grand finals as the Mountain Hawks garnered 30 points to finish fifth overall at the Patriot League Championship at Lake Quinsigamond Friday. Every Lehigh boat placed fifth, which were their seeds entering the day. It marked the first time since the league expanded to nine teams that all three Mountain Hawk boats finished fifth or higher. The last time Lehigh finished fifth or better in every race was 2009, when there were only five teams in the league.
Â
"The biggest thing I saw today was a sense of belonging," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We've talked a lot this year that we belong in the grand final and more than that, we belong racing for medals. When they came down that course, without a doubt, they knew they belonged in that race."
Â
Over the last three years, the Mountain Hawks have picked up 26, 33 then 30 team points, good for 89 in that span (29.67 average). For perspective, in the first 12 years of the Patriot League Championship, Lehigh garnered 124 points (10.33 average).
Â
"I think the sustainability of the points that we've been getting shows our culture has really developed as well," said Conley. "You can develop speed and you can develop a lot of different technical things, but as a team, if you develop the culture, that's what will sustain everything else."
Â
Each of Lehigh's boats placed third in heat No. 1 to advance to the grand finals for a second straight year. Prior to last year, that (all three boats qualifying for grands) hadn't happened even once over the first 13 years of the championship.
Â
The Varsity Eight posted a time of 6:41.734 in a tight grand final, with less than 16 seconds separating first and sixth. The Mountain Hawks were less than nine seconds behind second-place Bucknell. The Second Varsity Eight was tight as well, with the Mountain Hawks' time of 6:57.312 just over five seconds behind third-place Georgetown and just over 12 seconds behind first-place Navy. The Varsity Four also posted a competitive time of 7:59.500, finishing fifth as well.
Â
"If we were talking a couple years ago, the excitement of being fifth would have been the palpable thing, but right now, the palpable thing is disappointment," said Conley. "I believe that speaks volumes to where this team has come and where they want to go. If we can get the work done and really keep doing what we're doing, I feel like our process is exactly where it needs to be to do what we want to do."
