Mountain Hawks set for Patriot League Championship this Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's rowing team looks to cap off its spring season on a high note when the Mountain Hawks compete in the Patriot League Championship at Lake Quinsigamond near Worcester, Mass. Racing on Friday begins at 8 a.m. with heats. The Mountain Hawks look to build upon a strong 2018 Patriot League Championship, which saw them pick up their first-ever medals at Patriots.
Â
"The expectations have definitely increased for our team and so has the speed of the league as we have seen this spring," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We've shown we can compete and it's going to be fun seeing more teams competing at a high level at Patriots."
Â
Last season, Lehigh's Varsity Four and Second Varsity Eight each took home silver at Patriots. The Varsity Eight also reached grand finals for a second straight season, marking the first time in program history that happened. Many of those athletes return in 2019, and the experience should only help on Friday.
Â
"We have a number of athletes on the team that walked away with a medal last year," said Conley. "They've helped the newest members understand how to rise to the occasion, and it's brought out some great racing for the team."
Â
The Mountain Hawks saw their fair share of success this spring, capped off by sweeping regional foe Delaware two weekends ago.
Â
"This is the fastest team we've had at Lehigh since I've been here," said Conley. "They are technically sound, stronger than ever and definitely have a good sense of racing."
Â
Heading into Friday, the Mountain Hawks know they have put in the work all summer, fall, winter and spring. Now, it's time to trust each other and  Â
"Consistency has been the number one focus at this point," said Conley. "Consistency in our speed, composure, sleep and nutrition has been all the important things. While this has been a focus all year, we tend to put a little more emphasis on it this time of year.
Â
"Our goal is to walk away with medals in each event," Conley continued. "This team wanted to raise the stakes this year and they've done the work, so the only thing left is to get out on the course and do it."
