BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh wrestling program celebrated its 2018-19 season with the 96th annual Lewis Wrestling Dinner on Friday, April 5 in the Wood Dining Room at Iacocca Hall. More than 200 wrestlers, staff, family, alumni and fans were in attendance to celebrate a campaign that was highlighted by Lehigh's second straight EIWA team championship and a 12th place NCAA finish with three All-Americans.
The program featured dinner, comments from Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro and the Mountain Hawks' 10 departing seniors, a season highlight video and the presentation of program awards.
Sophomore heavyweight Jordan Wood the Outstanding Athlete award, which recognizes the wrestler who has made the most significant athletic contribution to the team. Wood tied for the team lead with 25 victories, won his second consecutive EIWA title and earned All-America honors with a fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh. He had five falls and 12 of his 25 victories produced bonus points.
The Scholar-Athlete award, which is awarded to the wrestler who in the eyes of his teammates best exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete, went to Jordan Kutler. A fourth-year junior, Kutler also posted 25 victories, competing at 174 and became a two-time EIWA champion while earning his second consecutive All-America medal with a seventh place finish. Kutler owns a 3.13 GPA as a behavioral neuroscience major, highlighted by a 3.81 performance in the fall semester.
Sophomore Jake Jakobsen received the Coaches Award, given to the individual who made significant contributions to the well-being of his team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership as evidenced by growth or presence of strong self-awareness, integrity, competitiveness, team-first mentality, and toughness. Jakobsen battled back from a scary injury situation in Lehigh's January 19 dual at American to reclaim the starting spot at 197. He qualified for his first NCAA Championship with a fifth place finish in the EIWA and went 2-2 in his first trip to nationals, capping a 12-9 season.
Deferred freshman Luke Resnick was awarded the Gerald G. Leeman Award. The honor is intended to highlight the accomplishments of an athlete who has displayed strong perseverance through the year and not necessarily the highest level of skill or success on the mat. Resnick started 15 duals for the Mountain Hawks at 125 and was Lehigh's entrant for the EIWA Championships, where he went 1-2, contributing to Lehigh's team title. He also won bouts in two duals, kicking off road victories at Navy and Oklahoma, and continued to improve as the season progressed.
Lehigh rebounded from an 0-7 dual start to finish 9-9, earning the No. 20 ranking the final NWCA dual meet poll. The Mountain Hawks crowned three individual champions (Wood, Kutler and freshman Josh Humphreys) to win their second straight EIWA team title and 36th overall. Eight Mountain Hawks qualified for the NCAA championships, with senior Ryan Preisch joining Kutler and Wood on the podium with a fourth place finish at 184.
The 10 departing seniors who offered reflections at The Lewis Dinner were Ian Brown, Tyler Casamenti, Brandon Diaz, Paul Dunn, Scott Parker, David Pipa, Ryan Preisch, Andrew Price, Cortlandt Schuyler and Gordon Wolf.
