Lehigh splits Saturday doubleheader at Army West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Lehigh baseball had a chance to get back on track in Patriot League play on Saturday afternoon, as the Mountain Hawks split a doubleheader with Army West Point at Doubleday Field.
The Mountain Hawks' offense got off to a good start in the opening game, taking an early 4-0 lead over the defending champions.
Senior Ryan Malloy tripled to center field in the top of the first inning, scoring Jeff Shanfeldt to take an early 1-0 lead. Junior Tony Gallo followed up with a double to right field, scoring Malloy to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead. With Gallo on second base, junior Matt Hand hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field to extend the Mountain Hawks' lead to 4-0.
Against junior right-hander Levi Stoudt, the Black Knights scored four times between the bottom of the first and second innings to immediately tie Lehigh at four runs apiece.
In the top of the fourth inning, freshman Gerard Sweeney notched a single to left field, scoring Eric Cichocki and Hand to push Lehigh out in front, 6-4.
After Army got two back on a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, the Mountain Hawks retaliated on offense from the fifth inning forward.
A Gallo double to left field in the top of the fifth inning scored two runs in Malloy and Shanfeldt to give the Mountain Hawks an 8-6 lead. Cichocki followed that play up with an RBI single, scoring Gallo to extend Lehigh's lead to 9-6.
Malloy's SAC-fly in the top of the sixth inning, scored Sweeney to give Lehigh a four-run lead to 10-6, which was then increased by Tyler Schreiner on his RBI single to center field, scoring Hand to make it 11-6. After Mike Maguire reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Schreiner, Sweeney's RBI single to right field, scored Cichocki to help Lehigh hold on for the 13-6 victory over Army West Point.
"Our offense continued to impress me quite a bit today," said head coach Sean Leary. "We kept the pressure on the entire game and we received contributions from a number of guys."
Sweeney went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs, while Malloy was 2-for-4 with a triple, sacrifice fly, two runs scored and two RBIs. Gallo also went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs, while Hand finished his Game 1 with a 2-for-3 day, with a home run, a double, three runs scored and two RBIs.
Senior lefty Ethan Frohman and pitched another brilliant outing of relief, going 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just three hits with one strikeout.
"Ethan was outstanding for us on the mound in game one," said Leary. "He provided a huge lift with his performance."
The positivity did not last however, as the Mountain Hawks were unable to generate any kind of offense in the second game, falling to the Black Knights, 14-0.
Lehigh gave up runs in every inning up to the seventh, while the offense sputtered and the defense committed six errors as a team.
Ryan Malloy got two more hits in the series, finishing the game with a 2-for-4 day, while freshman Casey Rother and sophomores Eric Cichocki and Quinn McKenna also managed to tally a hit.
The split gets the Mountain Hawks a 13-17 overall record, 3-6 in the Patriot League with a chance to get the series victory over the Black Knights on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
