BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two Lehigh women's track and field student-athletes broke their own school records in competition this past weekend and on Tuesday both women were recognized with Patriot League weekly awards. Senior Clare Severe was named Female Track Athlete of the Week, while sophomore Brittany Curtin was named Female Field Athlete of the Week.
For Severe, this is her second Athlete of the Week award of the 2019 outdoor season, while Curtin receives her first weekly award for the current season.
Severe competed at the Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pa., and broke her own school record in the 1500m. Her time of 4:22.78 was good for sixth place overall and tops among Patriot League runners. Severe shaved more than five seconds of her previous record of 4:28.32, set March 29 at the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina. Prior to the Raleigh Relays, the school 1500m mark had stood for nearly seven years. Severe also competed in the 800m at Bucknell, finishing 26th.
Curtin broke her own school record in the discus, competing at Moravian's Coach Pollard Invitational on Saturday. She threw 49.25m (161' 7") to take first place in the event, besting the mark of 48.63m (159' 6") she previously set at the 2018 Penn Relays. Curtin is the defending Patriot League outdoor champion in the discus. At the Coach Pollard Invitational, Curtin also competed in the hammer throw, finishing second with a throw of 47.27m (155' 1") and the shot put, where she threw 10.65m (34' 11.25") to finish 18th.
Another three-meet weekend awaits the Mountain Hawks with the Greyhound Invitational (at Moravian), the Larry Ellis Invitational (at Princeton) and the Virginia Challenge (at Virginia) all set for Friday and Saturday.
