Every Lehigh boat qualifies for finals in strong effort at Murphy Cup
3/23/2019 9:26:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
CHERRY HILL, N.J. – All five Lehigh boats that rowed on Saturday qualified for either the petite or grand finals, as the Mountain Hawks put together a strong effort at the Murphy Cup held on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. In the end, the Men's Varsity Eight was the Mountain Hawks' only boat to row beyond the morning heats, due in large part to windy and rough conditions on the water.
Â
"I thought the crews raced really well in the morning so I allowed each crew to decide for themselves based on the conditions they raced in whether they thought they would get anything out of racing in the afternoon," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "Because conditions deteriorated more and more, all crews except the Men's Varsity Eight said they proved what they wanted to prove. The Men's V8 thought they needed to go back out to learn more about themselves on the water."
Â
The Men's Varsity Eight went back out and raced to an impressive second-place finish, with a time of 6:16.53. This came after a 6:25.39 time in the morning. Meanwhile, the Women's Varsity Eight finished in 7:11.18, good for third in its heat.
Â
The Women's Junior Varsity Eight finished in 7:43.24 (third), the Men's JV Eight had a time of 7:07.52 and the Women's Varsity Four came in 8:36.06 (second).
Â
"Despite the season being a struggle with weather conditions, I do think our team has matured a lot with being able to handle that type of rowing and those kind of race situations that aren't ideal, which will only bode well for us in the future," said Conley.
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend when they face La Salle and Fairfield on Saturday, Mar. 30 on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
