Rowing wraps up successful day against La Salle and Fairfield
3/30/2019 9:42:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh rowing team headed to Philadelphia on Saturday and came home with a strong showing against La Salle and Fairfield. The Women's Varsity Eight, Men's Varsity Eight and Women's Second Varsity Eight all finished in first to highlight the day while the Women's Varsity Four and Men's Second Varsity Eight placed second. None of Lehigh's five crews who competed on Saturday finished any worse than second.
Â
The Women's and Men's Varsity Eight set the tone by each coming in first over La Salle and Fairfield with times of 7:05.6 and 6:24.5, respectively.
Â
"Men's Varsity Eight ended up racing a really tight race, which was great to see them be able to pull it out and stay composed," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We had a couple steering issues in both top varsity boats, but it didn't impact the end result. For the Women's Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight, it was great to see them try to find how much speed they could get. They got out pretty quick in relation to the field and kept their heads down and kept pushing forward."
Â
The Women's Second Varsity Eight finished with a time of 7:22.7, nearly 38 seconds ahead of the next boat to finish.
Â
"Today was exciting and we're looking forward to racing Navy and Georgetown next weekend, but I think this was a good day of racing with minimal condition impacts," said Conley.
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend. The women head to Annapolis on Saturday (Apr. 6) to face Navy and Georgetown. Then on Sunday, both the women and men compete at home on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown – competing against rival Lafayette in the River Cup first, then facing Mercyhurst and Jefferson.
