PITTSBURGH – Sophomore heavyweight Jordan Wood won to reach the semifinals and earn All-America honors, while four other Mountain Hawks will wrestle Friday night for a spot on the podium at the end of session three of the NCAA Championships Friday at PPG Paints Arena.
Wood used a second period escape and third period ride out to defeat former Iowa All-American Sam Stoll 2-0 in the quarterfinals. He becomes Lehigh's 151st All-American and gives the Mountain Hawks at least one semifinalist for the ninth time in the last 10 years.
Wood will face the No. 1 seed Derek White of Oklahoma State in the semifinals. White edged Wood 3-2 at the dual meet in Stillwater, Okla., on Feb. 3.
Lehigh went 1-2 in championship quarterfinals but had two of its three wrestlers come through the consolations to reach the round of 12.
In the 174-pound quarterfinals, junior Jordan Kutler dropped a 4-2 heartbreaker to Myles Amine of Michigan in the second sudden victory period. Kutler came just two seconds shy of riding out the second half of the first tiebreaker but a late Amine escape evened the match at two. Amine converted a low double leg shot to win in the second sudden victory period. Kutler will now face the No. 33 seed Devin Kane of North Carolina for a spot on the podium.
Senior Ryan Preisch ran into top seed Myles Martin of Ohio State in the quarterfinals at 184, with Martin claiming an 11-2 major decision. Preisch will wrestle in the "blood round" for the third straight year, with this year's opponent No. 11 seed Lou Deprez of Binghamton, who Preisch rallied to beat in the EIWA semifinals.
Freshman Josh Humphreys (157) and senior Gordon Wolf (165) both went 2-0 Friday morning to reach the round of 12.
Humphreys edged Chase Straw of Iowa State 3-1 in his first match Friday then rode a strong performance on top to an 11-0 major decision over John Van Brill of Rutgers. He will now face the No. 3 seed Ryan Deakin of Northwestern in his bid to make the podium as a true freshman.
Wolf shook off a tough start against Thomas Bullard of NC State, rallying from 10-5 down to claim a 12-11 decision in his first bout Friday. He then struck early against Joey Gunther of Illinois on the way to a 13-7 victory. Wolf will face No. 11 Bryce Steiert of Northern Iowa in the round of 12.
Sophomore Jake Jakobsen was the only Mountain Hawk eliminated Friday morning. Jakobsen won his first match 6-2 over Anthony McLaughlin of Air Force, but came up a point short against Josh Hokit of Fresno State in a 4-3 decision. Jakobsen's sophomore season ends at 12-9.
Lehigh has 22 points through session three, which is good for 17th place. Penn State has opened up a 13.5 point lead over Ohio State in the team race, with Oklahoma State in third, 24 points behind the Nittany Lions.
The NCAA Championships continue Friday evening with session four, featuring Wood's semifinal and Lehigh's four round of 12 matches, beginning at 8 p.m. The session will be televised on ESPN and ESPN3/The ESPN App, while audio coverage for all Lehigh matches will be available at Lehighsports.com/watch.
