BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team hopes the start of Patriot League play will provide a fresh start as the Mountain Hawks gear up for their league-opening three game series at Lafayette. An uncharacteristically tough stretch for the Mountain Hawks has them entering league play at 6-14 following a 6-2 start to the season.
The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon in Easton with a single game to follow at noon on Sunday.
Lehigh will now look to league play to try to regain the form that saw the Mountain Hawks win six straight Patriot League regular season titles from 2012-17 and the most recent two of their 14 tournament titles in 2015 and 2017.
In their first action since returning east from spring break, the Mountain Hawks fell 3-0 at Delaware on Wednesday, a game in which they out-hit the Blue Hens 7-6 but left nine runners on base.
Sophomore Payton Alsobrooks had two hits and stole a base, while freshman Carley Barjaktarovich reached base three times.
Freshman Jaelynn Chesson and junior Mary-Hannah Smith have been Lehigh's top two hitters through 20 games, with Chesson taking over the team lead in batting average at .393. Both Chesson and Smith have nine RBIs, which is tied for second behind Barjaktarovich's 10.
Lehigh will look to All-Patriot League selection Parker Boyd in the circle. Boyd did not pitch against Delaware but was 9-3 with a 1.66 ERA in the Patriot League regular season last year. Freshman Gabriella Nori and senior Emily Sorem pitched Wednesday at Delaware and will provide the depth needed in Patriot League play.
Lafayette enters league play at 2-16 overall and has lost six straight games. The Leopards were rained out against Fairfield on Thursday and dropped six games in Florida last week to the likes of Purdue, Monmouth, Brown and Columbia.
Brooke Wensel leads Lafayette with a .279 batting average, while Erin Scott has a team-best eight RBIs. Kinzi Van Wyk has seen most of the action in the circle for Lafayette and owns both Leopard wins.
Lehigh leads the all-time series 97-24 and swept Lafayette last year at Leadership Park, outscoring the Leopards 13-2 over three games. Lafayette snapped a 13-game Lehigh winning streak with a victory in the last game between these teams in Easton, in 2017.
Lafayette will broadcast all three games of the series on the Patriot League Network.
Following the Lafayette series Lehigh will open its home schedule with a 10-game home stand. Lehigh will host a doubleheader against Kent State Wednesday and then host Bucknell for three league games March 30-31.
