Mountain Hawks hit three home runs to support strong pitching; take two at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Lehigh pitchers combined to allow just one unearned run on four hits over two games while the offense hit three home runs as the Mountain Hawks opened Patriot League play with a doubleheader sweep of Lafayette Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Payton Alsobrooks went 4-for-5 with a three-run home run while junior Parker Boyd and senior Emily Sorem combined on a three-hitter as Lehigh took the opener 6-0. Freshman Gabriella Nori then struck out 12, while allowing just one unearned run on one hit while classmates Addie Kittel and Jaelynn Chesson both homered in a 4-1 Mountain Hawks victory.
With the sweep, Lehigh snaps its 12-game losing streak and improves to 8-14 overall and 2-0 in the league. Lafayette falls to 2-18 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Alsobrooks singled with one out in the first but was erased on a double play. She reached again on a one-out single in the third and eventually came around to score on a two-out single to center by senior Jennifer Stoll. She came up again in the third with two on and one out and drilled a three-run home run out to right center to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-0 lead.
Lehigh tacked on two more in the sixth as Alsobrooks doubled with one out for her fourth hit and then scored on a double to right by junior Mary-Hannah Smith. A bases-loaded walk to junior Reva Alderman put Lehigh up 6-0.
Boyd successfully navigated bases loaded jams in the first and third innings to keep Lafayette off the board. She walked five in six innings and allowed just three singles, while striking out seven to improve to 4-5 on the season. Sorem pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the win.
Smith added a 3-for-5 effort for Lehigh, which totaled 12 hits in the opener.
Lehigh fell behind in game two as Lafayette played an unearned, two-out run on a hit batter, an error and two walks.
Kittel pulled the Mountain Hawks even with her first home run of the season, out to center field in the second inning. She helped Lehigh take the lead in the fourth, leading off with a double. Junior Lexi van Ooyen brought pinch runner Lainey Stephenson home with a ground out to put Lehigh up 2-1.
Chesson provided some insurance with a two-run home run in the fifth, her second of the season.
Nori settled in after the first inning, keeping Lafayette without a hit until Erin Scott's two out single in the sixth. She allowed just the one unearned run and struck out 12 to pick up her third victory of the season.
Kittel went 3-for-3 to lead Lehigh, which finished with six hits in the nightcap.
Lehigh and Lafayette will wrap-up their series with a single game Sunday with game time set for noon. Lafayette will offer streaming video on the Patriot League Network.
