Lehigh rallies for 4-3 win at Lafayette to complete series sweep

3/24/2019 2:43:00 PM | Softball

EASTON, Pa. – Trailing 3-0 after two innings, the Lehigh softball team chipped away and eventually rallied to beat Lafayette 4-3 Sunday in the final game of the three-game rivalry series. Freshman Jaelynn Chesson put the Mountain Hawks ahead with a solo home run leading off the seventh inning, while classmate Gabriella Nori kept the Leopards at bay with five innings of nearly perfect relief pitching.

Sophomore Payton Alsobrooks went 4-for-4 to post her second four-hit game of this series as the Mountain Hawks swept the three games from the Leopards to improve to 9-14 overall and 3-0 after one weekend of league play.

Alsobrooks finished the league-opening series 8-for-12 with two doubles, a triple, a home run and four RBIs. Chesson homered twice and was 5-for-11 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Nori was terrific in the circle, allowing just one unearned run on two hits in 12 innings with two walks and 19 strikeouts.

Lafayette jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded single by Natasha Miner, while a Lehigh error allowed two more runs to come home.

Lehigh began to chip away at the deficit as Alsobrooks led off the third with a single and came around to score on a single up the middle by senior Jennifer Stoll.

Alsobrooks helped bring Lehigh within a run in the fourth when she tripled to right field with two outs to bring home junior Lexi van Ooyen.

Chesson had a hand in the tying and go-ahead runs. She led off the fifth with a double to left center and pinch runner Lainey Stephenson scored the tying run on a ground out by freshman Addie Kittel. Leading off the seventh, Chesson clubbed a Stacy Gordon offering over the left center field wall for her third home run of the season.

Nori struck out the side in the seventh to close out the series sweep. She allowed just one base runner, a Maddie Wensel single in the sixth, while striking out seven to earn her fourth win of the season. Junior Parker Boyd allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in two-plus innings.

Lehigh finished with 10 hits off of Gordon.

The Mountain Hawks will open their home schedule on Wednesday when Kent State visits Leadership Park for a doubleheader to kick off a 10-game home stand. First pitch for game one between the Mountain Hawks and Golden Flashes is set for 2:30 p.m.
