Mountain Hawks look ahead to league play after dropping midweek contest at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – In its final tune-up before the start of Patriot League play, Lehigh dropped a 3-0 decision at Delaware Wednesday afternoon at the Delaware Softball Stadium. The Mountain Hawks out-hit the Blue Hens 7-6 but left nine runners on base. Delaware scored on a RBI single in the second inning on a two-run home run in the third.
Sophomore Payton Alsobrooks had two of Lehigh's seven hits, while freshman Carley Barjaktarovich reached base three times behind a single and two walks.
Freshman Gabriella Nori started in the circle and was charged with three runs on five hits over five innings with a walk and six strikeouts.
Alsobrooks and Barjaktarovich reached base to begin the game but Delaware's Sarah Piening retired the next three batters in order to end Lehigh's early threat.
A leadoff walk came back to bite the Mountain Hawks in the second as Chayanna Gallardo singled with two outs to bring home Anna Steinmetz.
Lehigh put runners on again in the third, loading the bases with two outs but Piening got freshman Jaelynn Chesson to fly out to right to end the threat.
Steinmetz extended Delaware's lead with a two-run home run to center field with two outs in the second.
The Mountain Hawks opened the fourth with back-to-back hits but Piening induced a ground ball double play to get out of trouble. Over the final three innings, Lehigh had a Barjaktarovich one out single in the fifth, a leadoff double by Chesson in the sixth and a leadoff pinch-hit single by freshman Karsen O'Rourke in the seventh but could not capitalize.
Piening went the distance on a seven-hitter for Delaware (11-12), walking two and striking out four.
Lehigh will enter the start of league play at 6-14.
The Mountain Hawks will open Patriot League play with a three-game series at rival Lafayette. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon, and will be followed by a single game Sunday at noon. Lafayette will broadcast all three games on the Patriot League Network.
